ISP Field Technician

Role Overview

You will be the hands-on technical presence for a Nairobi-based internet service provider, working across the Ngong Road corridor and surrounding zones to bring fibre connections to life. Each day involves installing new FTTH/FTTB services, repairing damaged drop cables, and running diagnostics to keep subscribers online. Your work directly protects the company's reputation for dependable connectivity, so accuracy in splicing, testing, and documentation matters as much as your ability to work safely on a pole.

Key Responsibilities

• Deploy and terminate fibre optic and Cat6 cabling for new residential and business installations, following proper routing, securing, and labelling practices.
• Set up customer premises equipment, including routers, switches, and Wi-Fi access points, and verify connection speeds before closing out the job.
• Perform fusion splicing on distribution lines and customer drop cables to minimise signal loss and ensure clean, durable joins.
• Use OTDRs, power meters, and visual fault locators to trace breaks, measure attenuation, and confirm that repaired links meet performance standards.
• Inspect and maintain overhead and underground fibre infrastructure, proactively addressing potential failure points such as damaged connectors or strained cables.
• Climb utility poles with approved harnesses and safety gear to run aerial drops, replace faulty hardware, and restore service after outages.
• Complete job cards and service tickets accurately, recording materials used, splicing details, and any issues that need escalation to the network operations team.
• Brief customers on basic router settings and simple troubleshooting steps so they can resolve minor issues without repeated call-outs.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma or equivalent qualification in telecommunications, IT, electrical or electronic engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• At least two years of hands-on experience in FTTH/FTTB rollout, fibre splicing, and fault resolution within an ISP or similar network environment.
• Proven skill with fusion splicers, OTDR equipment, optical power meters, and structured cabling tools.
• Solid working knowledge of IP addressing, subnetting, LAN/WAN concepts, and wireless router configuration for home and small office setups.
• Ability to work safely at height, including climbing telecom poles and carrying equipment while following strict PPE and safety protocols.
• Professional communication skills, with the patience to assist non-technical customers and the discipline to log technical details clearly.
• Relevant certifications such as FOA/CFOT or CCNA will be an added advantage, as will familiarity with the Ngong Road, Dagoretti, Kibra, Adams Arcade, or Karen areas.

What We Offer / Why Join

This full-time field position comes with a monthly salary of KSh 30,000 to KSh 35,000, based on your experience and technical proficiency. You will work from a base along Ngong Road while covering field assignments across Nairobi, giving you varied daily tasks and direct exposure to real-world ISP infrastructure, from customer premises to backbone distribution points.
