Visual Arts Intern (Part-time Internship)

Role Overview

This is a hands-on, voluntary internship for an emerging artist or arts educator looking to support visual arts learning in a creative, inclusive school setting. You will work alongside experienced teachers to prepare and guide studio activities, care for materials and spaces, and help young learners explore drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media. The role matters because it directly strengthens the school’s ability to offer inquiry-driven, learner-centred art experiences that build confidence, curiosity, and expression in every student.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the delivery of dynamic, inquiry-based art lessons by helping to prepare materials, resources, and studio setups before and during class sessions.
• Assist learners one-on-one or in small groups as they experiment with a wide range of artistic techniques, tools, and media, adapting support to their individual needs.
• Care for and organise the art studio, including maintaining supplies, cleaning equipment, and ensuring a safe, welcoming, and inspiring environment for all.
• Encourage creative risk-taking and reflective thinking by posing questions, modelling artistic processes, and celebrating diverse outcomes.
• Help prepare and mount student artwork for displays, school showcases, and community exhibitions, including documenting works and learning journeys.
• Collaborate with teaching staff to integrate art into broader classroom projects and school-wide initiatives, contributing creative ideas and practical support.
• Participate in school events, community activities, and professional learning sessions, using feedback to continuously refine your practice.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts, Art Education, Fine Arts, Design, or a closely related field.
• A portfolio of your own artwork that demonstrates strong technical skill, creative thinking, and versatility across different media.
• A genuine enthusiasm for working with children and young people, ideally backed by prior experience in educational, camp, or community settings.
• Sound knowledge of child development and a commitment to supporting learners with diverse needs and abilities.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students, teachers, and parents.
• A collaborative, adaptable, and reflective mindset — open to constructive feedback and eager to learn from experienced practitioners.
• Alignment with the school’s values around inclusion, sustainability, respect, and learner-centred education.
• Willingness to obtain and provide a current police clearance/background check, certified copies of academic certificates, and at least two academic or professional references.
