It is the successor of Kimathi University College of Technology (KUCT), a constituent college … Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) was established under the University’s Act 2012 by the Government of Kenya in December 2012. It is a Public University that focuses exclusively on Technology. It is the successor of Kimathi University College of Technology (KUCT), a constituent college if Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), that was established in 2007. The University offers a wide range of programmes both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level in various Schools and Institutes. These include:Computer Science and Information Technology, Engineering, Applied Sciences, Food Science and Technology, Health Science, Business Management and Economics, Geothermal Energy Technology, Geomatics, Geospatial Information Systems and Remote Sensing, Tourism and Hospitality and Technical and Professional Studies. The University also offers diploma and Certificate courses for mid-level technical skills. The programmes offered by the University are approved by the Senate and the various designated bodies like Engineers Board of Kenya (CBK) and Commission for University Education (CUE) that was established by the government of Kenya through the Commission for University Education Act, 2010. DeKUT recognises research as a pillar of both institutional and national development and its strategic focus is to provide technological education and create unique structures for research,innovations, extension and technology transfer. Thus, Research and Innovation, Linkages and Technology transfer are key result areas in the University’s Strategic plan for 2014-2019. DeKUT is already implementing an ambitious physical facilities development programme to support the realization of her Vision and Mission. The University has in place a magnificent Resource Centre,which is a multi-purpose facility whose two phases are complete now. It comprises of Lecture theatres, a Library, Laboratories and offices for both administrative and academic staff. In line with her vision of being a Premier Technological University excelling in Quality Education, Research and Technology transfer, DeKUT has put up expansive and well equipped Engineering workshops and supporting Physics and Chemistry laboratories. DeKUT intends to establish a Science and Technology Park as per the Ministry of Education’s Master Plan for Science and Technology Parks in Kenya, the second of the kind will be established at Konza City. Job Description

Role Overview

This appointment supports the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering by bringing a doctoral researcher into its teaching and research workforce, with a clear focus on power systems. In practice, the role balances classroom and laboratory instruction with ongoing PhD study, helping to deliver engineering education while contributing to the department's research and innovation goals. The post is central to maintaining strong undergraduate teaching and expanding the department's academic output in electrical power engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and facilitate lectures, tutorial sessions, and laboratory practicals in power systems and related electrical engineering subjects.
  • Assist senior academic staff with the design and marking of assignments, practical reports, and examination scripts.
  • Supervise undergraduate student projects, particularly those involving power system analysis, machine operation, or energy delivery.
  • Conduct doctoral research aligned with the department's power systems interests and pursue publication in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings.
  • Support the management and safe operation of electrical machinery and power systems laboratory equipment.
  • Contribute to departmental academic activities, including curriculum development, student assessment, and quality assurance processes.
  • Participate in research seminars, innovation projects, and other scholarly initiatives that strengthen the department's academic profile.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering with a bias toward Power Systems, or an equivalent qualification from an accredited university.
  • Current registration for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or another equivalent doctoral programme, with demonstrable progress or active study toward that qualification.
  • Full registration or eligibility for registration with the relevant professional engineering body.
  • Clear potential to contribute effectively to teaching, laboratory instruction, research, innovation, and general academic activities within the department.
  • A commitment to completing doctoral research while actively participating in the university's undergraduate teaching needs.
  • Strong academic writing and communication abilities, with the capacity to present technical concepts clearly to engineering students.
