Job Description

Role Overview

This position within a Kenyan medical school’s pathology department calls for a qualified physician-pathologist who will split their time between classroom instruction and departmental academic duties. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, design course materials, assess student progress, and contribute to the intellectual life of the school of medicine. Your daily work helps shape the next generation of diagnosticians and ensures that pathology teaching remains rigorous, current, and clinically relevant to the broader medical curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions in general and systemic pathology to medical students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Develop, review, and update course outlines, examination papers, and other teaching materials in line with the school’s academic standards and the KMPDC curriculum expectations.
  • Supervise postgraduate students in their research projects, dissertations, and clinical rotations within the pathology department.
  • Set, invigilate, and mark university examinations, providing constructive feedback to students and maintaining accurate academic records.
  • Participate in departmental seminars, faculty meetings, and curriculum development committees as required by the school of medicine.
  • Guide junior faculty members and teaching assistants in laboratory practical preparation and marking consistency.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of sub-specialty content such as oncopathology, cytopathology, or molecular pathology where your expertise can strengthen the programme.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree or its recognised equivalent, obtained from an institution accredited by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • A Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in Human Pathology or an equivalent postgraduate qualification recognised by KMPDC.
  • Additional sub-specialty training in areas such as oncopathology, cytopathology, or molecular pathology will be considered a distinct advantage.
  • Full registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), including recognition as a specialist or sub-specialist in pathology.
  • Current retention on the KMPDC register, a valid practice licence, and valid professional indemnity cover.
  • At least three years of teaching experience in a recognised school of medicine, at the rank of lecturer, specifically within the field of pathology.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications relevant to teaching, research, and academic record management.
  • Foreign-trained applicants must hold a Certificate of Recognition from the Commission for University Education (CUE) for their academic qualifications.

What We Offer / Why Join

This role offers a stable academic career within a recognised school of medicine, giving you the opportunity to shape pathology training while remaining engaged in the academic hospital environment. You will join a team of medical educators dedicated to high standards in health professions education, with scope to grow your sub-specialty interests through teaching, research supervision, and collaboration with clinical departments. Further details regarding institutional terms and conditions will be communicated to shortlisted candidates at the appropriate stage of the recruitment process.
