Role Overview
This position is central to keeping a distillery complex in Western Kenya running smoothly. You will move raw materials, finished goods, equipment, and other authorised loads between the plant, farms, and designated delivery points, making sure every journey is completed on time without compromising safety or cargo integrity. Day to day, you will carry out pre-trip checks, follow factory speed limits, secure sugarcane and other loads properly, and work closely with site inspectors and dispatch teams to maintain a disciplined, accident-free transport operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Report for duty according to the shift schedule and obtain prior approval from the supervisor or site in-charge for any absence or leave request.
- Take full custody of the assigned truck and trailer, preventing unauthorised use, restricting the vehicle to its designated purpose, and parking only in approved areas.
- Drive the articulated truck and trailer safely across highways, rural roads, and factory grounds, adapting to weather, traffic, and load conditions at all times.
- Execute pre-trip inspections with the factory inspector before every departure from the site, and promptly flag any mechanical or safety defects.
- Follow all traffic laws, national speed limits, and site-specific speed restrictions within every factory location.
- Adopt fuel-efficient driving techniques, including smooth acceleration, proper gear selection, and steady cruising, to meet minimum fuel efficiency targets.
- Secure all cargo, especially sugarcane, using appropriate straps, chains, or covers to prevent spillage or shifting during transit.
- Maintain the interior and exterior cleanliness of the truck and trailer, and adhere to routine service schedules to keep the vehicle in optimal condition.
- Comply with zero-tolerance rules on unauthorised passengers, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and non-use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Requirements & Qualifications
- Minimum O-Level or Form Four education with at least 5 years of proven driving experience on heavy commercial vehicles.
- Candidates with lower formal education will be considered if they have at least 7 years of verifiable truck-driving experience.
- Hold a valid Class CE driving licence authorising operation of heavy articulated vehicles.
- Demonstrated experience driving articulated trucks or other heavy commercial vehicles, with a clean driving record and strong safety history.
- Ability to read and write is desirable for completing trip logs, inspection forms, and basic delivery documentation.
- Good communication skills in English and/or Kiswahili for liaising with dispatchers, site security, and loading crews.
- Prior experience in the sugarcane industry, agricultural haulage, or an industrial plant environment is an added advantage.
- Willingness to follow company safety procedures, traffic regulations, and operational requirements without exception.
