Driver – RMNCH Project

Role Overview

This position keeps a reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) programme physically moving across Kenya. Based within the transport and procurement function of a faith-based health organisation, the Driver carries project teams, health commodities, training materials and equipment to health facilities and community sites — frequently over long distances and demanding terrain — while keeping the assigned vehicle compliant, roadworthy and properly documented. The role directly determines whether outreaches, supportive supervision visits and trainings happen on schedule, so it suits someone who plans routes carefully, handles cargo securely and stays calm when something goes wrong on the road.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive project staff and other authorised personnel on official assignments, including long-distance journeys and multi-day field trips, with a consistent focus on safety, punctuality and courtesy.
• Map out routes in advance, deliver a short safety briefing before departure, and comply strictly with traffic laws, insurance conditions and internal transport policies.
• Transport health commodities, project supplies, training materials and equipment to facilities and field sites, loading and securing items so they are delivered intact and on time.
• Keep the assigned vehicle clean, fuelled and serviced to schedule; carry out routine inspections and coordinate minor repairs as they arise.
• Maintain vehicle compliance at all times — valid insurance and inspection certificates, plus a complete first aid kit, fire extinguisher and emergency equipment on board.
• Keep transport documentation accurate and current, including trip logs, fuel and mileage returns, maintenance records, and incident or accident reports.
• Support the Procurement Manager on fleet matters: sourcing quotations for repairs and servicing, liaising with approved garages and suppliers, and following up on parts and delivery timelines.
• Provide practical logistics for trainings, community outreaches, supervision visits, health facility assessments and review meetings, assist passengers with boarding and alighting, and respond to emergencies by giving basic first aid and alerting emergency services.
• Take brief notes or minutes during selected meetings, field visits and official engagements, capture basic photographs of events and activities in line with organisational communication standards, and help coordinate dispatch and courier of correspondence, packages and project documents.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Minimum of a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or equivalent high school certificate.
• Valid, clean driver's licence (Class BCE) together with a current certificate of good conduct; a valid Automobile Association of Kenya (AA) driving certificate is an added advantage.
• At least five (5) years of proven professional driving experience, ideally gained within an NGO or donor-funded project environment.
• Demonstrated ability to handle both manual and 4WD vehicles across varied Kenyan terrain and long-distance routes.
• Basic working knowledge of vehicle mechanics and routine maintenance; a first aid certificate is an advantage.
• Computer literacy and basic photography skills.
• Strong discretion and professionalism — passenger conversations, documents and field information must be treated confidentially, and the organisation represented well to partners and communities.
