Job Description

Role Overview

We are recruiting five Trade Development Representatives on a relief basis to keep our field coverage intact while members of the main TDR team are on leave. Each reliever steps into an existing territory, runs the same call cycles and customer relationships as the permanent representative, and makes sure that retail outlets and distributors receive consistent service rather than a gap in attention. Because the work happens in the field with limited day-to-day supervision, the role suits someone who is comfortable owning a route, solving problems on the spot, and reporting back accurately when the permanent TDR returns.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take over an assigned territory or route for the duration of a leave period and maintain the existing call cycle across retail outlets, wholesalers and distributor points.
  • Present and sell the company's product range to outlet owners and buyers, secure orders, and confirm quantities, pricing and delivery expectations.
  • Follow up on orders through to delivery, resolve short-supply or delivery issues, and manage returns, damages and near-expiry stock according to agreed procedures.
  • Execute in-store merchandising standards — shelf placement, facing, point-of-sale material and promotional displays — and correct gaps or out-of-stocks where possible.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with outlet staff, distributor personnel and key decision-makers so that coverage continues smoothly and future visits are welcomed.
  • Monitor competitor pricing, promotions, new product launches and general market activity, and feed observations back to the supervisor.
  • Track stock levels at retail and distributor level to anticipate reorder needs and prevent lost sales.
  • Submit daily and weekly activity reports covering calls made, orders taken, collections where applicable, and any issues needing escalation, and hand over a clear territory summary at the end of the relief period.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • At least two years of hands-on experience in sales or in the FMCG sector, ideally gained in a field-based or route-based role.
  • Solid working knowledge of the assigned area — familiarity with the outlets, routes, trading patterns and customer base in that territory.
  • Strong verbal communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to hold a conversation with everyone from a small shopkeeper to a distributor manager.
  • Proven ability to work independently in the field, manage your own daily schedule, and stay productive without close supervision.
  • Customer relationship skills that allow you to step into an established territory and be trusted by accounts quickly.
  • Prior experience dealing directly with retailers and/or distributors is a distinct advantage.
  • A valid driver's licence is required, as the role involves daily travel within the assigned territory.
  • A diploma or certificate in sales, marketing, business or a related discipline is an added advantage; practical field sales experience carries the greatest weight.
