Role Overview
This position centres on operating tractors across a sugarcane-producing estate in Western Kenya, moving harvested cane from the fields to the designated weighbridge without unnecessary delays. You will combine careful driving with routine mechanical checks, keeping the equipment in dependable condition so that daily transport targets are met safely and efficiently. Your attention to safe loading, stable hauling, and clear communication with supervisors helps maintain a steady flow of cane supply to support the company's agricultural and distillery needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive tractors with attached trailers to transport sugarcane along estate roads and to the weighbridge, following assigned routes and schedules.
- Load and haul approximately ten tonnes of cane per trip, ensuring the weight stays within recommended limits for safe vehicle handling.
- Carry out a pre-shift inspection of the tractor, checking studs, oil levels, coolant, tyre pressure, and greasing of movable parts before starting work.
- Operate the tractor and trailer in a way that avoids damage to the crop, the terrain, or the equipment itself, especially when turning, reversing, and braking.
- Adhere to all safety rules and traffic regulations both in the field and around the weighbridge, including speed limits and proper signalling.
- Alert the supervisor quickly about any mechanical faults, unusual noises, or breakdowns, and stop using the tractor if continued operation would be unsafe.
- Keep the tractor cabin, body, and attached implements clean and free of debris after each shift, and report any missing tools or damaged parts.
- Support basic field operations as directed, such as positioning trailers for loading and assisting with minor on-site adjustments when required.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Minimum of Class 8 or O-Level education, with the ability to read and follow written instructions and safety notices.
- Valid Class G driving licence for smart-card licence holders, or Class D for holders of the old-style licence, with the appropriate endorsements for tractor operation.
- At least five years of proven, hands-on experience as a tractor driver, specifically within the sugarcane industry.
- Demonstrated familiarity with sugarcane transportation, including field-to-weighbridge routing, haulage loads, and industry-specific safety practices.
- Good communication skills to interact clearly with loading crews, supervisors, and weighbridge staff.
- Basic knowledge of tractor maintenance, such as lubrication, filter checks, and minor fault identification, is a distinct advantage.
- Strong understanding of occupational health and safety requirements for agricultural vehicle operation and worksite conduct.
- A clean driving and work record, with no history of serious traffic violations or negligence incidents.
