Job Description

Role Overview

This molecular laboratory technologist serves as the primary hands-on specialist for daily specimen processing and testing, from receiving samples to delivering validated results that directly influence clinical decisions. The role centres on executing complex molecular assays with precision, troubleshooting workflows, and maintaining rigorous quality control standards to ensure every report is both accurate and actionable. Beyond benchwork, this position contributes to team development by training junior staff and students, while upholding safety protocols and assisting with operational improvements that keep the lab running efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, log, and prepare specimens for a wide range of molecular assays, ensuring correct handling and chain of custody.
  • Perform analyses efficiently and accurately, then release results—including critical values—within required turnaround times.
  • Operate, calibrate, and perform routine and preventative maintenance on molecular equipment, from open systems to fully automated platforms.
  • Run internal controls and quality checks for every molecular test batch, documenting and flagging any deviations.
  • Write, revise, and implement standard operating procedures for molecular workflows, ensuring compliance with lab standards.
  • Monitor and maintain hygiene, cleanliness, and safety in work areas, adhering to health and safety regulations.
  • Prepare and package outsourced samples at appropriate temperatures and hand them over to collection agents for transport.
  • Teach practical molecular skills to students and other laboratory technicians, reinforcing proper technique and best practices.
  • Contribute to quality improvement projects and participate in continuous medical education sessions.
  • Carry out any additional duties assigned by the supervisor or designate to support lab operations.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognised institution or an equivalent qualification.
  • Current registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board.
  • Minimum of three years’ hands-on experience in a molecular laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated competence in nucleic acid isolation from diverse sample types, PCR techniques, sequencing—including next-generation sequencing—and associated QC procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating both open and closed molecular equipment and platforms.
  • Ability to work with manual and automated workflows, switching between methods as needed.
  • Bioinformatics skills are considered a strong advantage.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow protocols precisely.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills to collaborate with team members and train others.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a commitment to meeting deadlines and maintaining quality.
