Role Overview
As a Technical Trainer, you will be the bridge between current industry practice and the next generation of skilled workers, turning structured curricula into hands-on learning that holds up in real workplaces. Your days will move between the training room, the workshop or lab, and the planning desk — delivering sessions, assessing learner competence, and refining the materials and assessment tools that keep a programme credible. The employer depends on this role to keep training outcomes aligned with accreditation expectations and employer demand, so the quality of your delivery directly shapes graduate readiness and the reputation of the programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver technical training sessions across the agreed programme, using a blend of demonstration, guided practice, and theory that suits adult learners at different starting points.
- Develop, review, and update learning materials, session plans, and assessment tools so they stay current with industry practice and qualification requirements.
- Assess learner competence through practical observation, written tasks, and portfolio evidence, and provide constructive feedback that supports progression.
- Maintain accurate training and assessment records, including attendance, results, and competency sign-offs, in line with institutional and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure training environments, tools, and equipment are safe, functional, and ready for use, and that learners follow correct safety and operating procedures.
- Provide guidance and pastoral support to learners, identifying those at risk of falling behind and agreeing realistic catch-up or support plans.
- Work with colleagues on programme planning, moderation, and continuous improvement activities, including internal and external audit or accreditation reviews.
- Keep your own technical and teaching currency through professional development, industry contact, and familiarity with emerging practices in your field.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A degree or equivalent qualification in the relevant technical or subject field.
- A recognised technical training or education qualification — this is mandatory for all trainer positions and cannot be substituted by industry experience alone.
- At least three years' relevant experience in a similar training role or within a comparable training environment.
- In-depth knowledge and practical understanding of tertiary training structures, including how qualifications, delivery, and assessment are organised and quality assured.
- Confident delivery and facilitation skills, with the ability to adapt explanations to learners of varying ability and prior knowledge.
- Sound assessment judgement and familiarity with competency-based assessment practice.
- Strong record-keeping and organisational habits, with the ability to manage multiple cohorts and deadlines without losing detail.
- Clear written and verbal communication, and the ability to work cooperatively with teaching teams, administrators, and industry stakeholders.
