Role Overview
This role focuses on the day-to-day management of a company’s tax compliance through the KRA iTax platform, including the accurate preparation and filing of VAT and corporate income tax returns. Beyond routine filings, the position supports the organization by ensuring all tax records are audit-ready, reconciling discrepancies, and liaising directly with the Kenya Revenue Authority when questions arise. The work directly protects the company from penalties and reputational risk while enabling smoother internal and external audit processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and submit VAT and corporate income tax returns exclusively via the KRA iTax system, ensuring all data matches supporting invoices and ledgers.
- Reconcile tax control accounts monthly, investigating and resolving any variances or queries from the tax authority.
- Maintain a complete, organized digital and physical archive of tax returns, receipts, and correspondence for audit readiness.
- Assist during internal and external audits by compiling requested schedules, providing timely documentation, and explaining tax positions to auditors.
- Monitor changes in Kenyan tax legislation and advise management on how new rules affect upcoming filings or strategy.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for KRA during compliance checks, audits, or routine information requests.
- Support tax planning initiatives, such as identifying eligible deductions or credits to minimize the company’s tax burden legally.
- Help prepare financial reports and reconciliations that feed into broader accounting functions when needed.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Commerce, or a closely related field.
- At least two years of hands-on experience specifically in taxation and audit work.
- Proven, daily-level proficiency with the KRA iTax system for VAT and income tax submissions.
- Solid experience filing VAT returns and corporate income tax returns, including handling amendments and responding to KRA queries.
- Active participation in internal or external audits, with the ability to prepare supporting schedules and liaise with audit teams.
- CPA Part II qualification completed or currently progressing toward full CPA certification.
- Strong grasp of Kenyan tax laws (Tax Procedures Act, VAT Act, Income Tax Act) and standard accounting principles.
- Advanced Excel skills (vlookups, pivot tables) and comfort with common accounting software.
- Excellent analytical thinking, organizational ability, and clear written/verbal communication.
- Capacity to work independently while managing multiple strict statutory deadlines without errors.
