Role Overview
As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, you will be the practitioner who turns a physician's imaging request into clear, diagnostic-quality information a care team can act on. Working directly with clients, you'll assess their condition, tailor each scan to the question being asked, and capture imagery that accurately reflects the anatomy and pathology present. Your attention to technique, safety, and detail directly shapes diagnostic confidence, keeps clients protected throughout the procedure, and supports the wider department's ability to meet demand for ultrasound services.
Key Responsibilities
- Review each client's medical history and supporting clinical documentation, then explain the procedure in language matched to the client's level of understanding and ability to participate.
- Complete clinical assessments and perform the diagnostic ultrasound examinations ordered by the supervising physician, following both professional standards and facility protocols.
- Evaluate the images produced during each study, interpret the findings, and draft preliminary results for the interpreting physician.
- Exercise independent clinical judgement throughout the scan so that relevant anatomical, pathological, and clinical details are reliably captured rather than missed.
- Maintain the client's physical safety and dignity during the examination, applying correct positioning aids and ergonomic scanning techniques that reduce strain on the sonographer and protect image quality.
- Prepare the examination room and ultrasound equipment before each study in line with infection control, sterilisation, and client safety requirements, and document any limitations of the examination so they can be escalated appropriately.
- Acquire supplementary imaging where needed to give the interpreting physician the best possible diagnostic picture, and operate the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) to manage study data.
- Carry out routine preventive maintenance on ultrasound equipment, and help grow the use of ultrasound services by coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to increase client volumes.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Ultrasound, Medical Imaging Sciences, or Radiography from a recognised institution.
- At least two years of hands-on experience as a sonographer in a reputable hospital or medical facility.
- Registration with the relevant regulatory or professional body where applicable, including a current practising licence.
- Working knowledge of the legislation and regulatory standards that govern sonography practice, client privacy, and confidentiality.
- Comfortable using computers and clinical imaging or records systems.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain procedures clearly and adapt to each client's needs.
- Sharp observational and analytical abilities, with the judgement to recognise when findings or examination conditions require escalation.
- A collaborative approach and a track record of working well within a multidisciplinary team.
