Role Overview
This role sits on the production floor of an apparel and garment manufacturing operation in Athi River, Machakos County, Kenya. Reporting to the Production Supervisor, the tailor carries out hands-on garment construction, alteration, pattern work, and finishing so that each batch meets required measurements, seam quality, and inspection standards. The position is important because consistent stitching, accurate sizing, and careful material use directly affect production output and the quality of finished garments.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate industrial single-needle sewing machines to join, assemble, and finish garments according to technical specifications and approved sample references.
- Work from production cut sheets, garment patterns, and measurement charts, keeping sizing and construction accurate throughout each production run.
- Maintain uniform seam allowances, correct machine tension, and clean thread finishing across all assigned batches.
- Perform garment alterations, including hem adjustments and resizing, based on provided specifications.
- Inspect, repair, and touch up defective or damaged garments returned from initial quality control checks.
- Draft, modify, and interpret basic garment patterns and measurement schedules for custom or mass-production orders.
- Check garments during assembly and after completion to identify stitching, tension, sizing, or finishing faults.
- Report defective fabrics, recurring machine issues, or sewing challenges to the floor supervisor, and carry out basic machine checks, oiling, cleaning, and workstation organisation.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Certificate or vocational qualification in tailoring, dressmaking, garment production, or fashion design.
- At least two years of practical experience as a tailor or machine operator in an apparel factory or commercial garment enterprise.
- Previous work in an Export Processing Zone, apparel export factory, or large-scale textile plant is an added advantage.
- Proficiency in single-needle industrial machine operation, pattern drafting, garment alterations, and fabric handling.
- Ability to read and interpret technical measurement charts, specification sheets, and assembly instructions accurately.
- Strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, quality awareness, and the ability to work quickly under production deadlines.
What We Offer / Why Join
