Job Description

Role Overview

This field-based position focuses on putting waste management principles into practice across local communities and operational sites. You will work directly with residents, vendors, and site teams to promote better waste segregation habits, monitor disposal practices, and support the daily functioning of recycling and recovery facilities. Your reporting and data collection efforts will help guide decisions on how to reduce illegal dumping and improve overall waste handling in the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organise and lead community awareness sessions that teach proper waste segregation at the source and explain the consequences of unsafe disposal methods.
  • Prepare accurate operational reports on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, documenting collection volumes, segregation rates, incidents, and site conditions.
  • Gather and interpret waste-related data to identify trends, bottlenecks, and opportunities for improving collection and recycling efficiency.
  • Support hands-on recycling and resource recovery work at the material recovery facility, including sorting, weighing, and coordinating outgoing materials.
  • Patrol known illegal dumping hotspots, record violations, and collaborate with local authorities to deter repeat offences.
  • Assist with the day-to-day operations at the Mwakirunge dumpsite, including monitoring waste placement, safety compliance, and site access.
  • Carry out additional fieldwork or administrative duties assigned by the supervisor to meet evolving programme needs.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A recognised certificate in environmental management, waste management, environmental conservation, waste handling and recycling, or another directly related technical field.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and email for reporting and record-keeping.
  • Must be an unemployed Kenyan graduate currently seeking an entry-level opportunity in the environmental sector.
  • Must not have retired from or exited formal employment; this role is designed for early-career professionals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical waste concepts in simple, accessible language.
  • Comfort and capability to work in outdoor field environments, including dumpsites, residential areas, and informal settlements.
  • A genuine willingness to learn on the job and engage respectfully with diverse communities, local leaders, and site workers.
  • Ability to compile basic reports, maintain accurate records, and follow reporting deadlines without close supervision.
