Job Description

Role Overview

This is a hands-on labouring and support position within a busy Garrison Engineer’s Department, helping to maintain and repair buildings, infrastructure, and facilities across a large military training estate. You will work alongside qualified tradespeople on tasks ranging from basic electrical and plumbing to carpentry, painting, and masonry, while keeping the site safe, clean, and operational. The work is physically demanding and weather-dependent, and your reliability directly supports the smooth running of essential services for personnel on site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior trades staff with a range of maintenance and construction tasks, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, masonry, and carpentry work.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, drills, jackhammers, and other equipment safely and correctly under instruction or as directed.
  • Keep all workshops and work areas tidy and hazard-free, carrying out end-of-shift cleaning and organisation to a high standard.
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain tools and equipment so they remain serviceable, safe, and ready for the next task.
  • Comply with all health and safety requirements, including reading and following risk assessments, site safety orders, and wearing the correct PPE for each job.
  • Manage materials and tools issued for tasks – storing them securely, protecting them from weather damage, and returning unused items to the store.
  • Support the transport and movement of materials, equipment, and personnel by driving, loading, and unloading as required.
  • Be available for emergency call-backs on a 24-hour basis and work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays during special events or urgent situations.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Essential: Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
  • Essential: Previous experience as a construction or general labourer on building sites, with practical knowledge of basic construction techniques.
  • Essential: Understanding of occupational hazards and standard safety practices, with the ability to carry out risk assessments for heavy manual work or difficult conditions.
  • Essential: Ability to operate a range of motorised and hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Essential: Capability to follow both oral and written instructions, maintain good working relationships with colleagues, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Desirable: A valid Kenyan driving licence in classes B, C1, and/or C.
  • Desirable: Familiarity with relevant local and national regulations, codes, and standards that apply to facility maintenance work.
  • Desirable: Willingness to complete training in areas such as confined spaces, working at height, legionella awareness, and asbestos awareness after being appointed.

What We Offer / Why Join

This role provides the chance to work within a structured military environment where safety and teamwork are prioritised. You will receive practical on-the-job training and have opportunities to develop skills in specialist areas like confined spaces, working at height, and hazardous substance handling, alongside a clear set of organisational policies and procedures. It is a varied and physically active role that offers exposure to different trades and the satisfaction of keeping essential facilities operational.
