Site Technical Leads – Terrestrial Carbon Inventory

Role Overview

Verst Carbon Limited is assembling a pool of short-term consultants and field personnel to support the delivery of a nature-based carbon project in Kenya. These are part-time, assignment-based engagements designed to flex around project milestones, with work packages beginning at staggered points between September and December 2026. The roles will involve hands-on fieldwork, community engagement, environmental data collection, and technical advisory support, depending on the specific assignment and the candidate's area of expertise.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out site-level assessments to verify land-use conditions, vegetation cover, and project boundary integrity in designated project areas.
• Conduct structured interviews and participatory surveys with local landowners, community groups, and project stakeholders to document land tenure and resource-use patterns.
• Collect, record, and quality-check geospatial and ecological data using mobile devices, GPS units, and standard survey protocols for later analysis.
• Support the preparation of technical reports, baseline summaries, and progress briefs tailored to the specific phase of the project being delivered.
• Facilitate training or awareness sessions with community members on project activities, monitoring procedures, and conservation best practices.
• Coordinate with project managers and field supervisors to ensure assigned tasks are completed on time, within budget, and in line with project safeguards.
• Identify and report any environmental, social, or logistical risks encountered during fieldwork, proposing practical mitigation measures where appropriate.
• Provide specialist input — such as ecological, forestry, GIS, or social safeguarding expertise — for short-term assignments that require a defined technical scope.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Relevant academic background (diploma, degree, or higher) in environmental science, forestry, natural resource management, agronomy, rural development, GIS, or a closely related discipline.
• Between 2 and 5 years of practical experience in nature-based project delivery, environmental consulting, field surveying, or community-based conservation work in Kenya.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct field work in rural or remote areas, including adapting to varying terrain, weather, and local transport conditions.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with fluency in English and working knowledge of Swahili or other local languages commonly spoken in Kenyan project regions.
• Proficiency in data collection tools, GPS navigation, and Microsoft Office applications; experience with mobile survey platforms (e.g., ODK, KoboToolbox) is an added advantage.
• Awareness of environmental and social safeguards, community engagement ethics, and the principles of free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC).
• Ability to work independently on short-term contracts, manage own schedule, and deliver outputs to clear deadlines with minimal supervision.
