Role Overview
This is a full academic appointment in an engineering department, combining classroom teaching, assessment, research supervision and departmental service. The lecturer designs and delivers courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, marks and moderates examinations, and helps shape the curriculum while mentoring the next generation of engineers. The role matters because it keeps the department's teaching current, grows its research base, and connects academic work directly to professional engineering practice through the Engineers Board of Kenya.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach and assess undergraduate and postgraduate students across the department's programmes, using a mix of lectures, seminars, practicals and other learning formats.
- Set, moderate, administer, process and mark examinations, ensuring assessment is fair, consistent and aligned with departmental and university standards.
- Develop teaching and learning materials, including course outlines, study notes, practical exercises and supporting resources.
- Act as an academic adviser and mentor to undergraduate and postgraduate students, supporting their academic progress and professional growth.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, and prepare research proposals to attract internal or external funding.
- Contribute to the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of curricula within the department.
- Attend and take part in departmental and faculty meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences, and build interdisciplinary collaborations within and beyond the university.
- Support departmental and faculty strategic planning, and carry out administrative, academic and consultancy duties as assigned, including work with external organisations.
Requirements & Qualifications
- An earned PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant field from an accredited and recognised university, plus current registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya. Or
- A Master's degree in a relevant field from an accredited and recognised university (considered in special cases), with at least three years' experience teaching at university level, in research, or in industry.
- A minimum of twenty-four publication points, of which at least ten must come from refereed journal papers.
- Registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya in all cases.
- Demonstrated ability to teach, assess and supervise students at tertiary level.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across the department and faculty.
- A commitment to ongoing professional development and to maintaining professional engineering registration.
