Role Overview
As a Corporate & Commercial Lines Underwriter at Sanlam Allianz, you will evaluate and price risk submissions from brokers and channel partners across a diverse portfolio of business accounts. Working within established underwriting guidelines, you will set coverage terms, enter premium transactions, and generate policy documents that keep clients protected while safeguarding the company's profitability. Your decisions directly influence how well the organisation retains profitable business and how strongly it competes in the general insurance market.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess new and renewal submissions for corporate and commercial lines, evaluating risk exposures, loss history, and financial statements to determine acceptable terms.
- Apply Sanlam Allianz underwriting guidelines to select risks, set coverage limits, and calculate premiums that balance competitiveness with portfolio profitability.
- Enter rating and premium data accurately into the underwriting system, ensuring all policy records reflect the agreed terms.
- Generate and issue policy documentation—including schedules, certificates, and endorsements—within the department's service benchmarks.
- Monitor existing accounts for changes in risk profile, recommending adjustments or renewal strategies that support retention of valuable clients.
- Collaborate with brokers, agents, and other channel partners to resolve queries, negotiate terms, and strengthen long-term working relationships.
- Stay current with regulatory requirements and internal compliance standards, ensuring every underwriting decision stands up to scrutiny.
- Provide technical guidance to less experienced team members and contribute to underwriting audits or portfolio reviews as needed.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business, or a related field.
- Professional qualification such as ACII or IIK (or progress toward completion).
- A minimum of five to eight years in general insurance underwriting or reinsurance, with increasing responsibility and a demonstrated history of managing complex, high-value accounts.
- In-depth knowledge of insurance products and market conditions, plus a solid grasp of regulatory compliance requirements.
- Advanced capabilities in risk assessment and analysis, combined with strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail, sound judgement, and excellent relationship management abilities.
