Role Overview
This is a field-first sales job: you spend your working day on the road across Murang'a, calling on the small shops, kiosks and vegetable stalls that keep local neighbourhoods supplied with everyday fresh produce and FMCG lines. You own a defined route, and your performance shows up directly in how full those shelves are, how quickly stock turns over, and how much cash actually comes back to the business. The role exists because volume in this market is won outlet by outlet, through regular visits, reliable delivery and relationships that keep vendors ordering from you instead of the next supplier.
Key Responsibilities
- Work a fixed daily route through Murang'a and its surrounding trading centres, visiting dukas, kiosks, mama mboga stalls and small trade outlets on a consistent call cycle.
- Sell the full product range on each call, pushing volume on core lines and introducing complementary products to increase the value of every order.
- Meet the daily, weekly and monthly targets set for your territory, and report progress against them to the Regional Sales Manager.
- Take accurate orders at the point of sale, then follow through on loading, delivery and replenishment so outlets never sit empty of fast-moving items.
- Protect product quality in transit and on display — handle fresh produce with care, rotate older stock forward, remove damaged units and keep presentation tidy enough to sell.
- Merchandise each outlet properly: visible positioning, correct pricing, agreed promotions applied and stock arranged so shoppers notice it.
- Recruit new stockists and trade partners, open accounts in parts of the territory that are under-served, and bring lapsed outlets back into the buying cycle.
- Collect payment on delivery and reconcile cash and mobile money takings against orders, keeping customer credit within agreed limits and escalating overdue balances.
- Keep route records current — visits made, order values, outlet stock levels — and feed back what competitors are charging and promoting, plus any shift in demand, to management.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Certificate or Diploma in Sales and Marketing, Business Administration, Agribusiness or a comparable field.
- A minimum of three years of hands-on route or field sales experience in FMCG, fresh produce, agribusiness or retail distribution.
- Direct selling experience with micro-retailers — kiosks, market vendors, mama mboga stalls and small trade shops — is a strong advantage.
- A valid driving licence or motorcycle riding licence is an added advantage.
- Persuasive pitching and closing ability, with the confidence to sell to busy vendors who make quick decisions.
- Solid route planning and time management, plus the self-discipline to stay productive without close supervision.
- Comfort building and maintaining relationships across both informal and formal trade channels.
- Enough numeracy to process orders accurately, reconcile cash and mobile money collections, and track customer credit balances.
- Willingness to be out in the field daily, moving between outlets across Murang'a County.
