Role Overview
You will work as a perioperative nurse inside a busy surgical department, where your main focus is keeping the operating theatre sterile, safe, and fully equipped for every procedure on the schedule. Your day-to-day work involves setting up surgical instruments, supporting the surgeon and anaesthetist during operations, and monitoring patients closely as they move through the surgical journey. The quality of your preparation and vigilance directly influences surgical outcomes, patient safety, and the team’s ability to respond quickly when complications arise.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare the operating theatre before each surgery by checking equipment, arranging sterile instruments, and verifying that all consumables are within their expiry dates.
- Assist the surgical and anaesthetic teams during procedures by passing instruments, managing swabs, and maintaining a strict aseptic environment at all times.
- Observe patients’ vital signs throughout the perioperative period, documenting any changes and reporting concerns to the lead surgeon or anaesthetist immediately.
- Deliver pre-operative education and post-operative care, helping patients understand their procedure, recovery plan, and potential warning signs to watch for.
- Maintain accurate, legible records for each surgical case, including operative details, specimen handling, and progress notes in line with hospital policy.
- Enforce infection prevention and control protocols, from hand hygiene and sterilisation practices to waste segregation and theatre cleaning standards.
- Handle surgical specimens with care, ensuring correct labelling, preservation, and transport for laboratory analysis without breaking the chain of custody.
- Join emergency surgical teams when urgent cases arise, prioritising speed and accuracy without compromising safety or sterility.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Hold a Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing, Kenya Registered Nursing, Kenya Registered Midwifery, Kenya Registered Nursing/Midwifery, or Kenya Registered Nursing/Mental Health and Psychiatry from a recognised institution.
- Possess a Higher Diploma in Kenya Registered Perioperative Nursing or Kenya Registered Theatre Nursing from a recognised institution.
- Have a valid registration certificate with the Nursing Council of Kenya and an active practising licence from the same body.
- Provide evidence of computer application skills through a certificate from a recognised institution.
- Demonstrate a thorough working knowledge of aseptic techniques, surgical instrumentation, and perioperative patient care protocols.
