Role Overview
As a Public Health Officer within a hospital environment, you will act as the frontline safeguard for patient, staff and visitor health — translating public health, infection prevention and control (IPC) and occupational safety principles into daily practice on the wards, in theatres, kitchens, laundries and utility areas. The position exists to keep the hospital compliant with statutory public health requirements while reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections, food- and water-borne illness and workplace injury. You will work alongside clinical and non-clinical teams, using routine inspections, surveillance data and staff education to identify risks early and drive practical, measurable improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out scheduled and spot hygiene and sanitation inspections across wards, theatres, isolation areas, kitchens, laundries, waste holding areas and washrooms, and follow up until identified defects are closed out.
- Monitor infection prevention and control practices — including hand hygiene compliance, use of personal protective equipment, cleaning and disinfection routines, and sterile stock handling — and provide corrective guidance to the teams concerned.
- Oversee healthcare waste management from segregation at the point of generation through safe storage, transport and final disposal, ensuring correct colour-coding, sharp handling and accurate waste records.
- Conduct routine surveillance of communicable diseases and notifiable conditions among patients and staff, investigate suspected outbreaks or clusters, and prepare timely reports for hospital management and the relevant public health authorities.
- Sample and assess drinking water, food and environmental surfaces, and coordinate pest control, vector control and general environmental cleanliness programmes.
- Support occupational health and safety activities, including workplace risk assessments, incident and needlestick injury reporting, post-exposure follow-up and monitoring of staff welfare issues such as sanitation and waste handling.
- Plan and deliver health education and refresher training for staff, patients and their families on hygiene, infection prevention, waste handling and workplace safety.
- Maintain inspection checklists, registers, incident logs and monthly performance reports, and support internal and external audits, licensing inspections and accreditation reviews.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Public Health from a recognised institution.
- Valid registration or licensing with the relevant professional regulatory body (for example, the Public Health Officers and Technicians Council).
- Demonstrable working knowledge of public health practice, sanitation, infection prevention and control, and occupational health and safety.
- Prior experience in a hospital or other healthcare setting is an added advantage.
- Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to advise, persuade and train colleagues at all levels.
- Sound record-keeping and reporting ability, with attention to detail and the confidence to enforce standards firmly but professionally.
