Job Description

Role Overview

As a Clinical Officer specialising in cardiology, you will be a frontline clinician responsible for assessing, diagnosing and managing patients presenting with cardiovascular complaints across outpatient, inpatient and emergency settings. Working alongside physicians, cardiologists and nursing teams, you will carry your own caseload — from routine hypertension reviews to acute chest pain triage — and act as the link that keeps cardiac care continuous, well documented and appropriately escalated. The role matters because timely recognition and management of heart disease directly reduces avoidable admissions, complications and long-term disability among the patients you serve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive cardiovascular histories and physical examinations, including blood pressure assessment, auscultation, peripheral pulse checks and assessment of cardiac failure signs.
  • Order, perform and interpret baseline diagnostic investigations such as electrocardiograms, cardiac biomarkers, chest radiographs and relevant laboratory panels, and coordinate echocardiography or specialist studies where indicated.
  • Diagnose and initiate treatment for common cardiac conditions including hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias and valvular disease, adjusting therapy according to patient response and clinical guidelines.
  • Participate in ward rounds and inpatient review of cardiac patients, monitoring progress, revising management plans and documenting clinical decisions accurately in patient records.
  • Provide emergency cardiac care, including stabilisation of acute coronary syndromes, management of hypertensive crises and arrhythmias, and timely referral to higher-level or specialist care.
  • Counsel patients and their families on medication adherence, lifestyle modification, diet, exercise, smoking cessation and self-monitoring, and support structured follow-up for chronic cardiac conditions.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation, registers and referral records, and contribute to audit, quality improvement and continuous medical education activities within the department.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory and imaging staff to ensure coordinated, patient-centred cardiac care.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Clinical Medicine & Surgery from a recognised institution.
  • Higher National Diploma in Cardiology or a closely related clinical field.
  • Registration with the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya (COC).
  • Possession of a valid, current practicing licence.
  • A minimum of three (3) years' relevant clinical experience gained in a hospital environment, with demonstrated exposure to cardiac patient assessment and management.
  • Sound clinical judgment, strong diagnostic skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure in both elective and emergency settings.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain cardiac conditions and treatment plans clearly to patients and families.
