Shift Production Supervisor
Role Overview
This role owns the shop floor for the duration of a shift, translating the production plan into finished output while keeping people safe, machines running, and quality within specification. Working closely with the Production Engineer, the supervisor keeps material, manpower, and equipment aligned so that customer orders leave the plant on time and at the right cost. The position sits at the point where planning meets execution, making it critical to both daily delivery performance and the plant's longer-term improvement agenda.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and coordinate the shift's production activities, allocating operators and equipment to meet daily output targets, efficiency measures, and customer delivery commitments.
- Track line performance hour by hour — output volumes, machine utilisation, cycle times, and process parameters — and adjust staffing or sequencing when the shift drifts off plan.
- Prepare the shift for a smooth start by confirming pre-start checks, material and consumable availability, and equipment readiness, and by coordinating with Maintenance on planned and unplanned interventions to limit downtime.
- Complete and post shift documentation, including production logs, handover notes, and operational reports, so the incoming team inherits an accurate picture of plant status.
- Serve as the quality gatekeeper during the shift: enforce work instructions, customer specifications, and quality management system requirements, and identify, segregate, and report non-conforming product.
- Investigate quality deviations and equipment problems alongside Maintenance, Quality, Planning, Stores, and HR, driving corrective and preventive actions through to closure and maintaining traceability records.
- Reinforce health, safety, and environmental compliance across the shift — correct PPE use, safe machine operation, lockout/tagout discipline, emergency preparedness, and prompt reporting of unsafe conditions.
- Lead Gemba 6S practice on the floor and support continuous improvement, TPM, and autonomous maintenance activities aimed at cutting defects, waste, and process variation.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma or equivalent qualification in Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, or Production Engineering.
- At least three years' experience in a comparable production supervision or shift leadership role.
- Experience in steel processing or another heavy manufacturing environment is an added advantage.
- Working knowledge of steel processing operations and the equipment and process flow involved.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management systems, and training in 6S, Autonomous Maintenance, and TPM.
- Computer literacy, with SAP experience considered a plus.
- Demonstrated leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving ability, with a results-oriented and collaborative approach to working across teams.
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili.
- Availability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays as the operating schedule requires, and physical fitness to work in a manufacturing environment while wearing the required PPE.
