Job Description

Role Overview

This position sits at the point where clinical decisions meet patients: you will dispense medicines accurately, explain how and when to take them, and keep the pharmacy's records and stock in order so that treatment is never delayed by a missing item or an unclear label. Working alongside doctors, nurses and other health workers, you are the last safety check before a prescription reaches the patient, which makes your judgment and attention to detail central to safe care. The employer needs someone who can keep pace with a high-volume dispensary without letting standards on storage, documentation or patient counselling slip.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, interpret and dispense prescriptions correctly, confirming dose, route, frequency and duration, and querying anything that looks unclear or unsafe with the prescriber before dispensing.
  • Counsel patients and caregivers on how to take, store and complete their medicines, including likely side effects and what to do if a dose is missed.
  • Maintain accurate dispensing records, controlled-substance registers and patient medication histories in line with legal and professional requirements.
  • Monitor stock levels and expiry dates, raise orders in good time, receive deliveries, and store all products under the correct temperature and security conditions.
  • Identify and report adverse drug reactions, medication errors and near-misses through the appropriate channels, and take part in reviews of what went wrong.
  • Work with prescribers, nursing staff and laboratory teams to resolve queries on therapy, substitutions and availability of medicines.
  • Guide and supervise pharmacy support staff and students on dispensing procedure, documentation and professional conduct.
  • Keep the dispensary clean, organised and compliant with Pharmacy and Poisons Board standards and good distribution practices.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in Pharmacy from a recognised institution.
  • Current registration and enrolment with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, including a valid practising licence.
  • At least one year of hands-on experience in a busy hospital or community pharmacy setting, with exposure to a high daily prescription volume.
  • Confident, clear communication with patients, prescribers and colleagues, including the ability to explain medicines in plain language; working fluency in English and Kiswahili.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a calm, service-oriented manner when dealing with distressed or hurried patients.
  • Sound record-keeping habits and working familiarity with pharmacy management or dispensing software.
  • Must satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya on leadership and integrity, supported by the relevant clearance certificates.
