Pharmaceutical Technologist

Role Overview

As a Pharmacist with our hospital team, you will be the point where prescribing decisions turn into safe, correctly dispensed medicines for every patient who walks through our doors. Day to day you will move between the dispensing counter, the stock room and the wards, checking prescriptions for appropriateness, keeping controlled and routine supplies accounted for, and advising patients and clinicians on dosage, interactions and adherence. The accuracy you bring to that work directly protects patients from avoidable harm and keeps the facility's pharmaceutical services running without interruption.

Key Responsibilities

• Review prescriptions and medication orders for correctness, dosage suitability, contraindications and potential drug interactions before dispensing.
• Dispense medicines accurately and label them clearly, giving each patient instructions they can actually follow at home.
• Counsel patients and caregivers on how and when to take prescribed medicines, expected side effects, storage requirements and what to do about missed doses.
• Order, receive and reconcile pharmaceutical stock, monitor expiry dates and storage conditions, and flag reorder levels before items run out.
• Maintain accurate records of all medicines received, issued and returned, including controlled substances, in line with regulatory and facility requirements.
• Record dispensing and stock data in the Health Management Information System and generate the reports used for consumption tracking and forecasting.
• Work alongside doctors, nurses and laboratory staff to resolve prescribing queries, recommend alternatives where a medicine is unavailable, and support rational drug use.
• Supervise and support pharmaceutical technologists and interns in day-to-day dispensing and stockroom practice, and take part in internal quality or audit checks.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A degree in Pharmacy or a Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology.
• At least three years of working experience after completing internship, with hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
• Current registration and a valid practising licence from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
• Confident computer use, particularly with Health Management Information Systems and routine record-keeping software.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the interpersonal approach needed to explain medicines clearly to patients and to negotiate treatment options with clinical colleagues.
• Careful attention to detail and the ability to stay accurate under pressure during busy dispensing periods.
• Willingness to work within the facility's shift or on-call arrangements as required for continuous pharmacy coverage.
