Role Overview

This position sits at the point where a prescriber's written order becomes medication in a patient's hands, so accuracy at every check matters more than speed. Day to day you will work between the satellite pharmacy and the wards — screening prescriptions, dispensing and labelling, preparing compounds and IV admixtures, counselling patients, and keeping the stock and expiry records that the rest of the clinical team depends on. Done well, the role keeps patients safe from avoidable medication harm and keeps the pharmacy audit-ready at all times.

Key Responsibilities

• Receive and verify prescriptions against approved standards and turnaround expectations, and raise any illegible, incomplete or inaccurate order with the prescriber immediately — documenting the error so nursing and pharmacy colleagues are informed.
• Check every label against the original prescription for patient name, drug, quantity and directions, and confirm expiry dates before any medication is dispensed or issued to a ward.
• Compound extemporaneous preparations and prepare intravenous admixtures in line with established procedures and aseptic requirements.
• Counsel patients on how to take their medicines and how to operate any related device, supporting adherence and recovery.
• Process drug returns and credits on the system promptly, and deliver discharge medication to patients in the wards where the service requires it.
• Communicate out-of-stock and non-stock items to prescribers and nurses without delay, propose suitable alternatives or place orders to close the gap, and keep the expiry register accurate and current.
• Document interventions, medication errors, near misses, adverse events, medication queries and patient complaints, and forward the records to the relevant office.
• Perform daily random medication checks, monitor variance levels in the assigned satellite, compile daily satellite reports, carry out regular stock takes and report on any special indicators allocated to you.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognised institution.
• Active registration with the Kenya Pharmaceutical Association.
• Current practising licence issued by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
• At least two years' working experience in a busy facility, preferably a hospital environment.
• Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
