Role Overview
As a Pharmaceutical Technologist, you will be the person patients and clinical staff rely on for the safe, accurate and timely supply of medicines. Working from the dispensary, you will interpret prescriptions, prepare and issue medicines, and talk patients through how to use them correctly — a role that directly shapes treatment outcomes and keeps the pharmacy operating within PPB standards. You will also carry day-to-day responsibility for stock integrity, documentation and the cold chain, ensuring that what is on the shelf is what the prescriber ordered and what the patient actually needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, interpret and dispense prescriptions accurately, confirming dose, route, frequency and duration against the prescriber's instructions before medicines leave the counter.
- Counsel patients and caregivers on correct administration, timing, storage, expected side effects and what to do if a dose is missed, with particular attention to adherence in chronic therapy.
- Compound and prepare extemporaneous formulations, diluted preparations and other non-manufactured items where the prescription requires it.
- Maintain accurate registers for controlled and narcotic substances, prescription records and daily dispensing logs in line with Pharmacy and Poisons Board requirements.
- Monitor stock levels across the dispensary and store, raise requisitions in good time, and reconcile deliveries against orders and invoices.
- Track expiry dates and batch numbers, quarantine short-dated or damaged stock, and manage returns and disposal through the approved channels.
- Preserve the cold chain for vaccines, insulin and other temperature-sensitive products, including daily fridge temperature monitoring and prompt escalation of any breach.
- Work alongside doctors, nurses and laboratory staff on ward and clinic rounds, clarifying prescriptions and flagging potential interactions, duplications or dosing errors.
- Supervise and guide pharmacy assistants, students on attachment and support staff on dispensing procedure, labelling and housekeeping.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a training institution recognised by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
- Current enrolment with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
- A valid PPB practising licence.
- At least two years of relevant working experience, ideally gained in a hospital or clinical pharmacy environment.
- A current Certificate of Good Conduct may be required.
- Up-to-date Continuing Professional Development (CPD) compliance will be an added advantage.
