Job Description

Role Overview

This position sits at the point where prescribing decisions become actual patient care: you will prepare and dispense medicines, check that each order is clinically appropriate, and make sure patients leave knowing exactly how to take what they have been given. The role carries direct responsibility for the pharmacy's stock integrity and record-keeping, so accuracy in documentation matters as much as accuracy at the counter. Working alongside nurses, clinicians and other pharmacy staff, you help keep treatment safe, uninterrupted and fully traceable within the hospital's systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, interpret and dispense prescriptions for inpatients and outpatients, confirming dose, route, frequency and formulation are appropriate for the patient before the medicine is released.
  • Counsel patients and caregivers on how and when to take each medicine, what side effects to watch for, and what to do if a dose is missed, adapting the explanation to their level of understanding.
  • Maintain pharmaceutical stock by monitoring consumption, raising requisitions in good time, checking deliveries against orders, and applying correct storage conditions for temperature-sensitive and light-sensitive items.
  • Run regular expiry and stock-level checks, quarantine short-dated or damaged items, and follow the correct procedure for disposal and documentation.
  • Record all dispensing, receipt and issuance activity in the Health Management Information System and reconcile physical stock against system figures.
  • Keep the registers required for controlled and specialised medicines complete, legible and up to date for inspection purposes.
  • Participate in ward rounds, medication reviews and clinical discussions, flagging potential interactions, duplications or dosing problems to the prescribing team.
  • Report adverse drug reactions and medication errors through the established channels, and support audits or quality-improvement activities within the pharmacy department.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Pharmacy degree or a Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognised institution.
  • A minimum of one year of working experience gained after completing internship, with hospital pharmacy exposure strongly preferred.
  • Current registration and a valid practising licence issued by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
  • Confident computer use, particularly with Health Management Information Systems and routine pharmacy or stock software.
  • Clear verbal and written communication, with the ability to explain clinical information simply and to work cooperatively with colleagues across departments.
  • Careful, methodical approach to record-keeping, with the discipline to follow regulatory and institutional procedures consistently.
