Role Overview

As a Pharmaceutical Technologist, you will be the operational core of the pharmacy unit, turning prescriptions into accurately dispensed medicines while ensuring every patient leaves with a clear understanding of how to take them. Your day-to-day work spans the full dispensary cycle—checking and processing orders, preparing labelled medications, keeping legal records current, and maintaining stock levels so the unit never runs short. Your precision and care are essential to patient safety and to the pharmacy's compliance with regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Receive and review prescriptions presented at the pharmacy window, confirming completeness and clarity before proceeding with dispensing.
• Interpret prescription details to make ready the correct medication, strength, dosage form, and quantity for each patient.
• Enter all dispensed prescriptions into the unit's pharmacy records or digital register, ensuring a clear audit trail for every transaction.
• Pre-pack and repack bulk medications into patient-specific or unit-of-use packaging, writing accurate and legible instructions on each label.
• Counsel patients on the correct use, storage, and possible side effects of their prescribed medicines, answering questions in plain language.
• Maintain drug registers and controlled drug books in line with Pharmacy and Poisons Board expectations, updating entries after each issue and receipt.
• Carry out monthly stock-taking of drugs and medicinal devices, comparing physical counts against inventory records and flagging discrepancies.
• Monitor expiry dates and storage conditions during stock checks, rotating stock and drawing attention to any medicines that need removal from active use.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Technology, or an equivalent qualification from an institution approved by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB).
• Current registration with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board as a Pharmaceutical Technologist.
• Sound working knowledge of pharmaceutical calculations, drug nomenclature, and standard dispensing procedures.
• Familiarity with pharmacy record-keeping practices, including prescription logs and stock inventory systems.
• Strong attention to detail, especially when checking prescription details and writing labels.
• Effective communication skills for patient counselling and for coordinating with pharmacists and other healthcare staff.
