Pharmaceutical Technologist

Role Overview

As the pharmacist on duty, you will be the frontline guardian of medication safety and availability. Day to day, you will receive and issue prescriptions, verify that medicines and medical supplies are in stock, and work closely with prescribers to catch errors, interactions, and expiry risks before they affect patients. Your attention to accuracy and record-keeping directly supports the pharmacy’s legal obligations, inventory health, and the quality of care delivered to every client.

Key Responsibilities

• Receive, fill, and dispense drugs and medical supplies exactly as prescribed by qualified medical practitioners, verifying the correctness of each order.
• Monitor stock levels continuously to prevent outages, ensuring essential medicines and supplies are always available for patients.
• Proactively flag short-dated and soon-to-expire products to doctors and team members so stock can be rotated or used before it becomes unfit for dispensing.
• Maintain full control of inventory movements, including recording receipts, issues, balances, and consumption to support accurate forecasting and reporting.
• Check and maintain pharmacy equipment in good working order, reporting any malfunction that could affect dispensing or storage quality.
• Keep all statutory registers — including the DDA register — updated and compliant, and file or store prescriptions for the legally required retention period.
• Screen every prescription for potential therapeutic incompatibilities and drug interactions, and communicate any concerns promptly to the prescriber and the patient.
• Explain prescriptions clearly to patients, notify prescribers of any errors or ambiguities, and ensure patient bills are updated accurately for each dispensed item.
• Produce regular reports on stock consumption and balances that feed into statistical summaries for the pharmacy, while promoting rational drug use and delivering an excellent customer experience to all clients.
• Follow all pharmacy policies and standards without exception, making safety and compliance part of every shift.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Recognised post-secondary diploma in pharmacy or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
• A current Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) licence, active and in good standing.
• At least one year of hands-on experience in a dispensing environment, with a working knowledge of stock control, drug interactions, and pharmacy regulations.
• Strong attention to detail, clear communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with medical staff while keeping the patient’s safety the top priority.
