Optometrist

Role Overview

As a licensed optometrist, you will be responsible for delivering day-to-day vision care to patients while ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment of refractive errors and ocular conditions. Your clinical judgment and attention to detail directly influence patient outcomes and the reputation of the practice as a trusted eye-care provider. You will work independently during consultations, while coordinating with other health professionals when cases require referral or joint management.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough eye examinations, including visual acuity testing, refraction, and tonometry, to determine patient needs.
• Diagnose refractive errors and prescribe corrective lenses, contact lenses, or other optical aids as appropriate.
• Identify signs of ocular diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, or diabetic retinopathy, and manage or refer cases based on clinical guidelines.
• Perform anterior segment assessments using slit lamps and other diagnostic equipment to support accurate clinical decisions.
• Keep detailed and up-to-date patient records, documenting examination findings, prescriptions, and follow-up recommendations.
• Educate patients on proper eye care, lens use, and preventive measures to reduce the risk of vision loss.
• Ensure that all diagnostic and examination instruments are properly maintained, calibrated, and sanitised between patient encounters.
• Cooperate with clinical support staff to coordinate patient flow and maintain a safe, organised consulting environment.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Hold a recognised Diploma in Optometry from an accredited institution.
• Have a minimum of one year of practical, relevant experience as a practicing optometrist.
• Be a licensed optometrist registered with the Optometrists’ Association of Kenya (OAK) and in good standing with the Kenya Health Professionals Oversight Authority (KHPOA).
• Demonstrate sound clinical reasoning and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision in a patient-facing setting.
• Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact clearly with patients from diverse backgrounds.
• Be proficient in maintaining accurate medical records and familiar with basic optometric diagnostic equipment.
