Job Description

Role Overview

This clinical position places a qualified medical officer at the centre of an outpatient clinic, where the day-to-day work involves seeing patients for routine and urgent concerns, carrying out examinations, and ordering the tests needed to reach accurate diagnoses. The role is essential to keeping care continuous and well coordinated, acting as the link between the clinic, patients, specialists, and the main hospital so that referrals move quickly and treatment plans are followed through effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take detailed patient histories and perform thorough physical examinations to inform diagnosis and treatment decisions.
  • Order and interpret laboratory investigations and radiology studies, ensuring they follow current evidence-based practice and clinic protocols.
  • Monitor the progress of patients with acute and chronic conditions, reviewing their status regularly and adjusting care plans as needed.
  • Provide preventive care through screening examinations, wellness checks, risk assessments, early detection of disease, and education aimed at helping patients avoid illness.
  • Perform privileged emergency medical and surgical procedures when urgent, life-threatening situations arise and require immediate intervention.
  • Engage consultants and relevant hospital departments early in the care process to build the most appropriate treatment plans for complex or specialised cases.
  • Coordinate smooth and efficient referrals between the clinic and main hospital, sharing clear information to prevent delays or gaps in care.
  • Work alongside clinical and non-clinical colleagues to deliver patient-centred, coordinated care that reduces errors, limits waste, and makes efficient use of available resources.
  • Take part in clinic quality improvement initiatives, collaborating with clinic management and the Quality and Patient Safety team to raise standards of care.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or an equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution.
  • Successful completion of at least a two-year post-graduate internship.
  • Full registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
  • A valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate.
