Job Title: Perioperative Unit Manager
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic nursing leader to direct and manage our perioperative services. This role combines clinical expertise with strategic management to ensure high‑quality patient care, staff development, and operational efficiency within the surgical unit.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Administrative Duties
- Leads the team in formulating, implementing, and evaluating annual goals and objectives aligned with surgical services and nursing division strategic plans.
- Provides effective supervision to nursing staff and utilizes learning opportunities for their professional development.
- Develops collaborative working relationships that link all contributors in the multidisciplinary team around patient care issues.
- Ensures appropriate staff coverage and skill mix for safe, effective patient care.
- Guides the team in developing, implementing, and reviewing policies, procedures, protocols, clinical pathways, and care guidelines according to identified standards.
- Responsible for recruiting, selecting, and training the nursing team.
- Develops and implements nursing retention strategies to reduce staff turnover.
- Conducts performance reviews for perioperative unit staff and creates action plans to support individual growth.
- Fosters a positive working environment through a motivational leadership style to enhance job satisfaction.
- Prepares monthly and annual reports based on team goals and communicates progress to the team.
- Implements measures to control unit costs, stock levels, and bad debts.
- Participates in the budget process and ensures efficient resource utilization.
- Collaborates with the marketing department to design and implement strategies that increase business.
- Actively participates in nursing division activities such as developing nursing policies, procedures, and quality indicators.
Clinical Practice
- Continuously initiates innovative, evidence-based strategies to improve patient care.
- Leads the development of a culture of safe perioperative practice in collaboration with clinical teams and actively participates in multidisciplinary clinical rounds.
- Works with the lead physician to evaluate care and outcomes through mortality and morbidity discussions, clinical incidence trends, and clinical indicators.
- Establishes standards of care with unit staff and monitors delivery according to those standards.
- In collaboration with the Director of Surgical Services, fosters the development of nurses by providing educational opportunities and exposure to relevant learning forums.
- Ensures a system is in place to monitor nurses’ clinical knowledge, skills, and competencies.
- Employs effective management strategies to support staff in enhancing safe patient care.
- Promotes nursing research and acts as a resource person for perioperative unit staff.
- Develops and maintains effective internal and external networks to improve nursing practice.
Risk Management & Customer Care
- Responsible for staff, patient, and family satisfaction with perioperative services.
- Responds to client complaints in a timely manner by resolving the issue or alerting the appropriate personnel.
- Implement patient satisfaction surveys, monitors incident/complaint trends, and takes corrective action.
- Informs the Chief Dental Officer and relevant directors about high‑risk patients, incidents, and sentinel events.
Requirements
- KRCHN or BScN with current licensure from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Certification in BLS.
- Proficient in basic computer skills.
- Minimum of 5 years of clinical nursing experience in operating room nursing within an acute care hospital.
- Demonstrates expert knowledge and skills in operating theatre nursing.
- Demonstrates leadership and management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
