Job Description

Role Overview

This role places an experienced emergency and trauma nurse at the frontline of a fast-paced hospital environment, where rapid assessment and decisive intervention can be the difference between life and death. You will join a dedicated medical team responsible for stabilising critically injured or acutely ill patients, coordinating emergency responses, and delivering specialised nursing care from initial arrival through to transfer or discharge. Your ability to remain calm under pressure and apply advanced clinical skills directly improves patient outcomes and supports the broader emergency department's operational readiness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Triage patients presenting to the emergency department, prioritising care based on the severity of their condition and available resources.
  • Perform rapid physical assessments, identify life-threatening injuries or illnesses, and initiate emergency interventions within your scope of practice.
  • Administer prescribed medications, IV fluids, blood products, and emergency treatments while closely monitoring vital signs and patient responses.
  • Assist in resuscitative procedures, including airway management, defibrillation, chest compressions, and bleeding control, as part of the trauma team.
  • Prepare patients for diagnostic imaging, laboratory tests, and surgical or specialist referral, ensuring timely and safe handover to other departments.
  • Document all assessments, interventions, medications, and patient progress accurately and promptly in the medical records system.
  • Provide emotional support and clear communication to patients and their families during high-stress situations, explaining procedures and expected outcomes.
  • Maintain emergency equipment, ensure stock levels of critical supplies, and participate in departmental quality improvement and infection control initiatives.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN) qualification from a recognised training institution.
  • An active practice licence from the Nursing Council of Kenya, with no restrictions or pending disciplinary matters.
  • Formal specialisation in Trauma & Emergency nursing, evidenced by a recognised certificate or completed postgraduate training in this field.
  • Current, valid BLS and ACLS provider certifications, with the ability to demonstrate practical proficiency in these resuscitation protocols.
  • A minimum of three years of hands-on clinical experience within an emergency department or trauma unit, preferably in a high-volume referral hospital.
  • Strong clinical reasoning skills, manual dexterity, and the capacity to perform multiple critical tasks simultaneously in chaotic environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Kiswahili, enabling effective coordination with multidisciplinary teams and clear patient interaction.
  • Physical stamina and emotional resilience to handle extended shifts, heavy workloads, and exposure to distressing or traumatic cases.
