Job Description

Role Overview

This position is based at a healthcare facility and reports directly to the facility in-charge. The nurse will be the primary clinical contact for mothers, newborns, and children, delivering end-to-end care from antenatal visits through postnatal follow-up, while also managing the Child Welfare Clinic and the Expanded Program on Immunization. Beyond day-to-day patient care, the role carries responsibility for strengthening health outcomes through accurate documentation, outreach sessions, and mentoring of junior staff, all with the aim of reducing maternal and child mortality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver full antenatal care, including clinical assessments, health education, and ongoing monitoring of maternal wellbeing.
  • Handle normal deliveries and step in for emergency deliveries when a mother arrives in the second stage of labour.
  • Provide postnatal support covering breastfeeding guidance, family planning counselling, and newborn care instructions.
  • Identify pregnancy-related or postpartum complications and either manage them on-site or make prompt referrals to appropriate services.
  • Perform routine clinical checks such as blood pressure measurement, fetal heart rate monitoring, and vaginal examinations.
  • Administer tetanus immunisations to pregnant women and offer family planning services, including long-acting reversible contraceptives.
  • Provide post-abortion care and assist with cervical cancer screening and treatment where required.
  • Monitor newborns for complications, support safe breastfeeding, refer vulnerable infants to nutrition services, and deliver essential neonatal interventions such as immunisations and treatment of common ailments.
  • Run the Child Welfare Clinic by tracking growth and development, managing common childhood illnesses like diarrhoea, pneumonia, and malaria, and giving nutritional counselling to caregivers.
  • Keep complete, accurate patient records and submit regular reports on maternal and child health indicators.
  • Supervise and mentor junior nurses, take part in clinical audits and continuing medical education sessions, and support in-facility health talks plus community outreach activities.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Hold a KRCHN, KRN, or KRM qualification and be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working in a busy maternal and child health department or clinic.
  • Comprehensive clinical skills in maternal, newborn, and child health, with the ability to handle pressure and work in demanding settings.
  • Training in Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care or Respectful Maternal and Newborn Care will be a strong advantage.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with patients, families, and colleagues.
