Night Auditor
Role Overview
The Night Auditor carries the front desk through the quietest and most financially sensitive hours of the hotel's day, balancing the books while still looking after anyone who walks through the lobby. You are the only point of contact for late arrivals, early departures and overnight guest requests, and you are also the person who closes out the day's transactions so the morning team starts with clean, accurate numbers. Done well, this role protects revenue, resolves problems before the day shift arrives, and keeps the property running smoothly around the clock.
Key Responsibilities
- Run the nightly audit and close the day's business, verifying that room charges, food and beverage postings, payments and adjustments have all been recorded correctly.
- Reconcile cashier floats, credit card batches, cash and other payment methods, investigating and documenting any discrepancies before the shift ends.
- Prepare and distribute daily revenue reports, occupancy and rate summaries, and exception notes for management and the morning team.
- Manage check-in and check-out for late arrivals, early departures and walk-in guests, following registration, identification and payment procedures.
- Handle overnight guest enquiries, requests and complaints directly, escalating security, maintenance or medical issues according to hotel procedure.
- Post charges and settle folios for in-house accounts, then prepare the documentation needed for billing, credit control and month-end processes.
- Monitor the lobby and public areas during the shift, coordinate with security or duty management, and complete handover notes for the incoming shift.
- Support front office administration such as no-show processing, reservation updates and filing so records stay complete and audit-ready.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Hospitality Management, Accounting, Finance or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum of two years' experience in night audit, front office, accounts or a comparable role within the hospitality industry.
- Strong numerical and analytical ability, with the confidence to spot inconsistencies in figures and trace them to their source.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy when posting, reconciling and reporting financial data.
- Solid understanding of hotel operations and accounting procedures, including how revenue streams, folios and payment types fit together.
- Clear communication and genuine guest service skills, since overnight shifts often mean working without immediate supervision.
- Ability to work independently and stay composed during night shifts, including weekends and public holidays as rostered.
- Comfort with hotel management or accounting systems; hands-on experience with a property management system is a distinct advantage.
