Senior Software Engineer, Google Play

Role Overview

Software engineers in this group build and evolve the systems behind Google Play’s gaming experiences on Android. In practice, you’ll ship code that runs across Android devices with Google services enabled, work through architecture and debugging problems with peers, and shape player- and developer-facing features alongside product and design partners. The role matters because your output reaches a huge Android audience and some of the biggest game studios, so quality and usability decisions have immediate, visible consequences.

Key Responsibilities

• Build, test, and maintain product or system features, with emphasis on server-side code that supports Google Play gaming experiences.
• Take part in or run design reviews, comparing technical options with teammates and stakeholders before committing to an architecture.
• Read and evaluate code from other engineers, offering actionable feedback on style, correctness, test coverage, performance, and maintainability.
• Investigate product and system failures, trace them to their source, and coordinate fixes that account for hardware, network, and service-operation impact.
• Keep documentation and educational material current as products, programs, and user feedback change.
• Partner with product managers and UX colleagues to raise the quality and usability of what the team ships.
• Help deliver features on new and upcoming products in the Android gaming space, contributing across a broad technical surface.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or comparable practical experience.
• 5+ years of software development experience in at least one programming language.
• 3+ years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products.
• 1+ year of experience with software design and architecture.
• Hands-on experience with server-side programming.
• Preferred: Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
• Preferred: 5+ years working with data structures and algorithms.
• Preferred: 1+ year in a technical leadership role.
• Preferred: Experience building accessible technologies.
