Job Description

Role Overview

This is a short-term, shift-based role for a qualified medical officer who can step in to keep outpatient and inpatient services running smoothly at a busy hospital. You will handle daily consultations, ward rounds, admissions, and emergency response, covering gaps created by staff leave, CME sessions, and high patient loads — including nights and weekends. Your work ensures continuous 24-hour care without the facility needing to add permanent staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out full patient consultations, including history-taking, physical examination, and differential diagnosis for both acute and chronic presentations.
  • Manage treatment plans for patients across OPD and ward settings, adjusting therapy based on clinical progress and investigation results.
  • Make admission and discharge decisions, ensuring clear documentation and proper handover to the next shift or the primary care team.
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging, and other diagnostic studies, then explain the findings and next steps to patients and families.
  • Deliver targeted health education and counselling on disease prevention, medication adherence, and follow-up care.
  • Respond rapidly to medical emergencies, including resuscitation and stabilisation, and coordinate referrals to senior staff or specialist units when needed.
  • Maintain accurate, timely entries in the hospital’s HMIS/EMR system, including consultations, prescriptions, and procedure notes.
  • Participate in clinical audits and continuing medical education activities during your time on site, contributing to quality improvement.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • MBChB degree from a recognised medical school, with full registration by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and a valid annual practising licence.
  • A minimum of 1–2 years of post-internship clinical experience, ideally as a Medical Officer in a hospital setting with both OPD and inpatient exposure.
  • Demonstrated competency in diagnosing and managing common medical conditions, as well as handling emergency cases and basic resuscitation.
  • Confidence in using hospital management information systems or electronic medical records for clinical documentation.
  • Ability to interpret laboratory and radiological results and act on them within an appropriate clinical timeframe.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and surge periods when patient volume spikes or staff are absent.
  • BLS/ACLS certification is an added advantage, as is prior locum experience in a Kenyan hospital.
