Medical Officer

Role Overview

As a Medical Officer, you will be the frontline clinician managing a diverse caseload across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency settings. Your daily work involves assessing patients, ordering and interpreting tests, and delivering treatment plans that align with established clinical protocols. This role is essential to ensuring that every patient receives safe, timely, and effective care while maintaining rigorous documentation and regulatory compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out comprehensive physical exams, gather detailed medical histories, and develop differential diagnoses for each patient encounter.
• Order necessary laboratory work, imaging, and other diagnostic tests, then interpret results to guide treatment decisions.
• Prescribe medications and therapies based on current evidence and hospital-approved clinical guidelines.
• Perform daily ward rounds for inpatients, review progress, adjust care plans, and coordinate safe discharges.
• Manage acute emergencies, including triage, resuscitation, and stabilisation of medical, surgical, or obstetric cases.
• Conduct minor clinical procedures—such as wound closure, lumbar puncture, chest drain insertion, and IV cannulation—within your scope of practice.
• Keep accurate, legible patient records, including charts, discharge summaries, and referral letters, and adhere to insurance pre-authorisation and audit requirements.
• Work closely with consultants, nursing staff, and allied health teams to optimise patient outcomes, and actively engage in mortality reviews, CME sessions, and clinical governance activities.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB or MBBS) from a recognised university.
• Full registration and a valid practising licence from the relevant national medical council (e.g., Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council).
• At least 1–3 years of post-internship clinical experience in a busy hospital environment.
• Current certifications in ACLS and BLS (ATLS or ALSO are advantageous).
• Strong diagnostic and emergency-procedure skills, excellent verbal and written communication, empathy in patient interactions, and proficiency with hospital management systems.
