Job Description

Job Purpose

The role provides independent, objective assurance on risk management, internal controls, and governance within Treasury, Risk, and Finance functions, ensuring compliance with Sharia principles, banking regulations, and organizational policies. It supports asset protection, financial performance optimization, and operational efficiency through audits, investigations, policy reviews, project involvement, and administrative tasks, with evaluation and reporting of all findings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate audit engagements covering Treasury Operations, Risk Management Activities, and Financial Controls.
  • Conduct risk-based audits focusing on liquidity risk, credit risk, market risk, operational risk, and financial reporting accuracy.
  • Assess the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls over cash management, investments, foreign exchange, and treasury products.
  • Review compliance with Bank of Kenya regulations, internal policies, and industry best practices relating to Treasury, Finance, and Risk functions.
  • Monitor adherence to risk appetite and regulatory limits in treasury activities and recommend improvements where necessary.
  • Oversee audit testing related to treasury valuation processes, risk registers, and reporting frameworks.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Risk, and Treasury teams to identify vulnerabilities, develop mitigation strategies, and implement corrective action plans.
  • Review the preparation and implementation of ICAAP and other Basel 2 regulatory requirements across the bank by the Risk Department for the correctness of data and computations as advised by the Central Bank of Kenya and Basel Guidelines.
  • Develop audit programs to verify compliance with all relevant laws and regulations; keep abreast of regulatory changes and adapt audit plans accordingly.
  • Manage audit assignments to ensure professional standards are maintained and all assigned audit steps are executed within the approved time budget.
  • Conduct audits, examine and identify areas for improvement and operational efficiencies based on audit findings and industry best practices, and determine the adequacy of the system of control.
  • Prepare and present audit findings, recommendations, and reports to senior management.
  • Review work performed to ensure audit objectives are achieved, including completeness of audit documentation per IA methodology.
  • Provide input for revision of audit programs/review approach to achieve specific objectives in a more effective/efficient manner.
  • Follow up with audit clients to get updates on the audit action plan and appraise the adequacy of corrective actions taken to mitigate risks.
  • Cultivate a culture of learning and development; seek coaching and mentoring from supervisors to enhance skills and capabilities.
  • Drive the creation of excellence and high-performance organization culture by embedding learning and creativity to incorporate agility and accelerate transformation.
  • Advise management on new developments affecting portfolio/control and provide proactive solutions; communicate complex technical audit concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Leverage technology solutions and foster innovation to enhance the Internal Audit Department’s efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Perform work in accordance with the charter, consistent with the Internal Audit Charter and the Global Internal Audit Standards (GIAS).
  • All the above accountabilities include but are not limited to any additional/new tasks or responsibilities assigned by the line manager.

Job Specification

Education

Bachelor’s Degree plus Professional Certificate (CA/CPA/CIA/CISA equivalent qualification is an added advantage).

Training / Skills

  • Strong knowledge of treasury management systems, risk management frameworks, and regulatory compliance requirements in Kenya.
  • Solid financial analysis, risk assessment, and audit report writing skills.
  • Proficiency in audit software and financial reporting tools.

Work Experience

Minimum 6–8 years of auditing financial/other sectors – preferably three years in a banking environment and with a focus on Treasury, Finance, and Risk functions in the banking industry.
