Logistics Officer-IPT

Role Overview

This position keeps goods and raw materials circulating across the company's plants, storage yards, and rail terminal, with day-to-day ownership of interplant transfers, bulk cargo movements from designated holding areas into production sites, and rail consignments. The Logistics Officer plans each movement, follows it from loading through proof of delivery, and acts quickly when breakdowns, paperwork gaps, or scheduling conflicts threaten to slow things down. The value here is direct: fewer idle vehicles, lower storage exposure, uninterrupted feed into the plants, and a logistics picture that managers can trust because someone is actually tracking it.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and oversee the transfer of raw materials, finished goods, and other stock between plants, depots, and designated storage locations, confirming quantities, loading windows, and delivery priorities with both the sending and receiving sites.
• Coordinate the haulage of bulk cargo from assigned loading areas to the relevant plant or warehouse, working alongside the imports logistics officer and appointed transporters to keep each consignment inside its required timeline.
• Assign vehicles and issue dispatch instructions in line with approved transport plans, then monitor each unit from the loading point until it reaches its destination.
• Support rail movements from the terminal to the plants by liaising with railway operators and internal teams on schedules, and by tracking wagon loading, dispatch, arrival, and offloading through to completion.
• Issue daily transport requirements to appointed hauliers and follow up on vehicle availability, driver allocation, positioning, loading, and final delivery, flagging recurring service failures or non-compliance to the Logistics Manager.
• Maintain daily movement trackers covering road, rail, interplant, and plant-bound deliveries, and prepare the daily and weekly status reports that accompany them.
• Watch and report on key performance measures such as on-time delivery, vehicle turnaround, port-to-plant and rail transit times, loading and offloading delays, storage exposure, outstanding deliveries, and proof-of-delivery compliance.
• Verify and file the full documentation trail — delivery notes, transfer documents, weighbridge tickets, container details, and signed proof of delivery — escalating missing paperwork or compliance concerns without delay.
• Confirm cargo availability, customs clearance status, and transport allocation for inbound material, and raise potential delays that could affect production, customer supply, or logistics cost.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Transport Management, Business Management, or a comparable discipline.
• Three to five years of hands-on experience in logistics, warehouse, and transport operations management.
• Practical background in transport coordination, fleet tracking, warehouse operations, or distribution is a strong advantage.
• Exposure to road haulage, rail movements, containerised cargo, or interplant logistics is desirable.
• Comfortable working with Microsoft Excel and standard office applications for tracking and reporting.
• Familiarity with ERP or logistics management systems is an added advantage.
• A certification in fleet, logistics, or transport management is beneficial.
• Strong coordination and follow-up ability, with clear written and verbal communication across plants, transporters, and rail operators.
• Well organised and detail-driven, with the time-management skills to juggle several simultaneous movements in a fast-paced operation.
• Confident problem-solver who knows when to escalate, and who can manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Basic analytical and reporting capability, plus the integrity and accountability to work unsupervised when required and collaboratively when the situation calls for it.
