Locum Nurse

Role Overview

This position acts as the on-site clinical nurse for a school community, handling everything from everyday minor complaints to urgent medical situations that arise during the academic day. The nurse keeps the Medical Centre running smoothly, delivers safe and confidential care to students and staff, and acts as a trusted link between families, school personnel, and outside health professionals. Because student wellbeing underpins participation and learning, the role directly supports a calm, healthy, and safe campus environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver routine nursing care and first aid to students and employees throughout the school day, including evaluating and treating common ailments, minor wounds, and other non-critical health issues.
• Respond promptly to medical emergencies, applying appropriate emergency protocols and stabilising patients until further help arrives.
• Administer prescribed and over-the-counter medications while following school medicine policies, nursing standards, and safeguarding requirements.
• Create and maintain secure health documentation that is precise and privacy-protected, recording visits, treatments, observations, and relevant communications.
• Keep an eye on pupils who have long-term health conditions, reviewing their needs regularly and ensuring follow-up actions are completed.
• Provide medical coverage for school events, sports, excursions, and other activities where a nurse's presence is needed.
• Coordinate referrals to hospitals, clinics, or specialists, and serve as a clear point of contact for families, employees, and outside clinicians regarding student health needs.
• Keep the Medical Centre clean, safe, and compliant with infection prevention practices, while collaborating with the Head of Medical Centre and colleagues to maintain readiness and continuity of care.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse licence and a completed nursing diploma or degree from a recognised school of nursing.
• Current First Aid and CPR certification is beneficial.
• Hands-on nursing background involving young people, especially within education or child health environments, would be advantageous.
• The ability to explain health matters simply, build rapport across age groups, and keep multiple tasks organised.
• Confidence to make sound nursing judgements alone when necessary, balanced by a cooperative approach to shared care.
• A compassionate, dependable, and professional approach to student health and confidentiality.
