Job Description

Role Overview

This role places you at the centre of a 24-hour aeromedical operation, responding to emergency evacuation requests and delivering intensive care to critically ill or injured patients during air and ground transport. As a Locum Flight Nurse, you will be responsible for assessing patients, stabilising them in often unpredictable environments, and ensuring safe, seamless transfers from referring facilities to higher-level hospitals or trauma centres. Your work directly supports the organisation’s commitment to safe operations, responsive customer service, and expert clinical leadership across every medical evacuation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the 24-hour Control Room, monitoring telephone, radio (UHF/VHF), email, and other communication channels to receive and respond to evacuation requests promptly and professionally.
  • Coordinate every phase of a medical assistance case, from gathering patient demographic, clinical, and logistical details to following up with admissions and obtaining regular medical progress reports.
  • Liaise with the medical team lead on new requests, assist in dispatching medical teams, and help prepare cost estimates and Guarantees of Payment (GOPs) for clients.
  • Prepare and inspect all medical equipment, medications, and supplies before each mission, checking serviceability and ensuring everything needed for advanced life support is ready.
  • Accompany patients on air ambulances, commercial medical escorts, and ground transport, delivering advanced life support, resuscitation, stabilisation, and continuous monitoring throughout the journey.
  • Communicate patient status updates and estimated arrival times to the Control Room and other stakeholders while in transit, maintaining a clear chain of information at all times.
  • Perform safe patient transfers between facilities, ambulances, and aircraft, including clinical handovers to receiving teams, completion of relevant documentation, and assistance with admissions, discharges, and immigration procedures.
  • Clean, disinfect, restock, and maintain all medical equipment after missions, complete inventory checklists, and report any defects or shortages.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Must be a Kenyan Registered Nurse with a valid practice license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Must hold a Higher National Diploma in Intensive Care Nursing; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is an added advantage.
  • At least 4 years of nursing experience, including 2 years in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
  • Current certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), with experience in pre-hospital emergency patient care.
  • Proficiency in computer applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, internet, and CRM systems.
  • Teaching experience, instructor status in a healthcare-related certification, or critical care transport experience (ground or air) is an added advantage.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, with excellent interpersonal skills and empathy.
  • Demonstrated ability to stay calm under pressure, think critically, solve problems, and work effectively within a team.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, attention to detail, and commitment to safe operating practices.

What We Offer / Why Join

This is an opportunity to work within an established medical evacuation organisation that operates around the clock, giving you exposure to diverse and challenging cases across regional and international transfers. You will apply your intensive care expertise in dynamic settings, from control room coordination to hands-on flight nursing, while contributing to life-saving missions that require both clinical excellence and operational reliability. The role also allows you to develop your skills in mass casualty response, special event coverage, and cross-border patient movements within a structured, team-oriented environment.
