Role Overview
This position keeps the library running as a reliable, well-organised information service, with the Koha integrated library system at the centre of daily work. The librarian handles the full lifecycle of library materials — from acquisition and cataloguing through circulation and eventual withdrawal — while supporting the people who depend on the collection for study, teaching, and research. Success in the role means accurate records, smooth system operation, and patrons who can find what they need without friction.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, edit, and maintain bibliographic and item records in Koha, applying consistent cataloguing and classification standards so the collection remains searchable and accurate.
- Run day-to-day circulation operations, including checkouts, returns, renewals, holds, reservations, fine handling, and patron record maintenance.
- Administer Koha configuration and routine upkeep across relevant modules, such as the OPAC, acquisitions, serials, and reporting, and escalate technical issues to IT or system vendors as needed.
- Process newly acquired materials end to end: ordering or receiving, physical preparation, labelling, barcoding, shelving, and inventory reconciliation.
- Generate circulation, overdue, and collection-use reports from Koha to support stock decisions, reporting requirements, and service improvement.
- Staff the service point and respond to reference, research, and reader-advisory enquiries from library users, guiding them through both physical and digital resources.
- Orient and support patrons and colleagues in using the Koha OPAC and self-service functions, including short instruction sessions where required.
- Carry out collection maintenance such as shelf reading, shifting, binding decisions, and weeding according to established policy.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Library & Information Science (LIS).
- Demonstrated proficiency with the Koha integrated library system, including cataloguing and circulation workflows.
- Working knowledge of cataloguing and metadata standards such as MARC, AACR2 or RDA, and a recognised classification scheme (for example DDC or LCC), along with subject heading practice.
- Hands-on library experience, ideally in a setting where Koha was the primary system in daily use.
- Strong accuracy and attention to detail when handling bibliographic data, patron records, and financial transactions at the service desk.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to explain systems and resources to users of varying technical ability.
- Ability to work independently on routine tasks while coordinating with colleagues, IT support, and external suppliers.
