Woodland Star International Schools mantra is ad astra per aspera, meaning through hardships to the stars. Located in the complex dynamics of a developing country, we recognize the great challenges that the world faces today. As a school, we have an incredible opportunity to empower children to see, to think, and to become. Woodland Star is a place of stability and mindful transformation, enabling children to reach beyond the limitations constructed around them. Through avant-garde education, exploration of identity, and a strong environmental focus, we offer a holistic experience that teaches children to discover their passions, analyze society, and value connectedness. Ultimately, we want to teach children how to take actions that lead to a better world through overcoming their own unique challenges growing, through hardship, towards the stars. View more View less

Role Overview

This internship places you at the heart of a lively school environment, where you will work alongside experienced teachers to bring the Kiswahili language to life for young learners. Day to day, you will help prepare lesson materials, guide small groups and individual students through exercises, and take part in cultural activities that make language acquisition enjoyable and meaningful. Your contribution directly supports the school’s commitment to nurturing curiosity, creativity, and a deep respect for language and culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with teaching staff to plan and run engaging Kiswahili lessons that capture students’ attention.
  • Provide targeted support to individual learners and small groups, helping them grasp vocabulary, grammar, and conversation skills.
  • Create and organise learning aids, classroom displays, and resource kits that reinforce language themes.
  • Lead interactive activities such as songs, storytelling, games, and role-plays that encourage active participation.
  • Help track student progress by assisting with assessments, marking exercises, and maintaining simple records.
  • Support school-wide Kiswahili events, assemblies, and cultural celebrations by preparing materials and coordinating student involvement.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive classroom atmosphere where every child feels encouraged to speak and experiment with the language.
  • Take part in staff meetings, professional development sessions, and broader school activities as part of the team.
  • Model the school’s values and safeguarding standards in all interactions with learners, colleagues, and the wider community.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in or recent completion of a Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Kiswahili, Languages, or a related subject area.
  • Strong oral and written proficiency in both Kiswahili and English.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for language teaching and a natural rapport with children.
  • Prior experience working with young people (in classrooms, camps, tutoring, or similar settings) is an asset, though not mandatory.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to listen, explain clearly, and adapt to different learning needs.
  • A collaborative mindset, comfortable working alongside fellow interns, teachers, and school leadership.
  • Creativity and flexibility when planning lessons or responding to unexpected moments in the classroom.
  • A commitment to uphold the school’s mission, values, and student safety policies.
  • Willingness to obtain a current police clearance certificate if one is not already held.
  • At least one academic or professional reference who can speak to your character and abilities.
