Role Overview
This position owns the day-to-day irrigation cycle across a working agricultural and landscaped estate in Seychelles, deciding when, where, and how much water reaches each block of crops or planted ground. The person in this seat keeps pumps, pipework, valves, drippers, and sprinklers running at peak condition so that plants never suffer from shortage, excess, or uneven delivery, while field crews stay organised, trained, and safe. Reporting into Farm and Operations Management, the supervisor is the technical anchor for water stewardship on site — protecting yield, controlling operating costs, and preventing avoidable system failures.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and adjust daily watering schedules based on crop stage, soil moisture readings, and current weather, then re-plan as conditions shift.
- Track consumption across the network to keep water use efficient and flag losses caused by leaks, overrun, or faulty control settings.
- Keep drainage channels, runoff paths, and low-lying areas clear so water moves away from root zones instead of pooling.
- Log every irrigation event — volumes applied, run times, pressure readings, and defects noticed — to build an accurate operational record.
- Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance and urgent repairs on pumps, filtration units, mainlines, sub-lines, control valves, drip lines, and sprinkler heads.
- Diagnose and fix blockages, leaks, pressure drops, and electrical or controller faults, escalating issues that need specialist support.
- Allocate daily tasks and inspection routes across field technicians, and coach them on system handling, maintenance practice, and safe working methods.
- Assess crew performance and coordinate timing with farm, nursery, and landscaping colleagues so watering aligns with growth and planting cycles.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma or bachelor's degree in Irrigation Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Horticulture, Landscaping, Agriculture, or a comparable discipline.
- At least eight years of hands-on irrigation experience, including direct responsibility for operating and maintaining large-scale networks.
- Demonstrated supervisory background — scheduling crews, assigning shift duties, and managing field teams to consistent output and safety standards.
- Practical command of drip systems, overhead sprinklers, pumping stations, filtration setups, and automated irrigation controllers.
- Ability to read soil moisture, interpret weather effects on irrigation demand, and judge drainage requirements accurately.
- Experience on agricultural farms, commercial nurseries, golf courses, or sizeable landscaped estates is a strong advantage.
- Clear communication in training and reporting, with the discipline to maintain logs and maintenance records reliably.
