Investment Officer – Kenya
Inkomoko Kenya is hiring an Investment Officer to manage client relationships, conduct due diligence, oversee portfolio performance, and maintain our investment management system. This role is based in Kakuma and supports entrepreneurs with access to finance.
About the Opportunity
As an Investment Officer, you will be a trusted partner for Inkomoko Kenya clients. You will work directly with entrepreneurs to provide debt financing, ensure timely repayments, and support business growth. This role combines financial analysis, customer relationship management, and operational system oversight.
Key Responsibilities
Due Diligence & Investment Preparation (60%)
- Respond to inquiries from prospective borrowers and help them apply for investment products.
- Explain the terms, repayment requirements, and seriousness of debt financing to entrepreneurs.
- Conduct investment appraisals, collect detailed personal, business, and guarantee information, and set up new investment accounts.
- Prepare and execute investment contracts and arrange in-kind disbursements.
- Perform due diligence through site visits, document preparation, and coordination with Business Development Advisors and Business Associates.
- Communicate findings to the Portfolio Manager and assist in preparing credit reports for Investment Committee meetings.
- Take borrower photos, obtain signed photo waivers, and ensure accurate stories are posted on the Kiva platform for fundraising.
Portfolio Management (20%)
- Deliver excellent customer service through daily conversations, correspondence, and site visits to maintain strong, positive relationships with borrowers.
- Collaborate with the Business Development Services team to support borrower success and conduct monitoring visits.
- Keep delinquency and default rates below targets set during yearly goal setting.
- Track borrower information and communicate client status to key stakeholders.
- Actively participate in weekly Portfolio Review Meetings.
- Maintain a tracking system for borrower payments and contact information.
- Work with Finance & Admin to produce payment invoices and perform monthly reconciliation of investment transactions.
- Engage with government leaders, court systems, and others to follow up on non-payment.
- Ensure compliance with Kiva partnership requirements, including reporting and journaling.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Investment Management System (20%)
- Update disbursements and repayments in the Investment Management System (LMS powered by Odoo).
- Maintain proficiency with investment software applications and demonstrate their use.
- Work with system providers to optimize application use, streamline processes, and ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Assist with system parameters and design to meet needs across multiple departments.
- Manage user security access and ensure proper segregation of duties.
- Develop and maintain workflows for all stages of investment.
- Advise management on automating key lending processes.
- Supervise all investment operations, including posting payments, payoffs, balancing, and disbursing funds.
- Provide lending team with updates and procedural changes.
- Participate in reviewing and recommending operational systems and procedures.
- Interact with lending staff to improve system accuracy and efficiency.
- Prepare related reports and administer the system.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications & Requirements
- University degree in Finance or a related field.
- Fluent in English and Swahili (both spoken and written).
- Experience with Islamic lending practices is an added advantage.
- Strong financial and accounting skills; familiarity with business financial policies in Kakuma.
- Experience in investment management, microfinance, capital leases, or access to finance for micro and small businesses is strongly preferred.
- Prior experience dealing with customers or debt collection.
- Prior experience in a lending environment.
- Experience providing business advice to entrepreneurs.
- Prior experience with investment management system software.
- Decisive, able to deliver unpleasant messages to debtors, and assertive enough to secure full repayment.
- Experience managing difficult clients and achieving positive outcomes.
- Very strong attention to detail and good follow-through.
- Comfort with the civil court system; previous litigation experience preferred.
- Unrelenting perseverance, personal integrity, and critical thinking skills.
- 2+ years of relevant work experience.
- Must be legally eligible to work in Kenya.
