International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)

About ILRI

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is an international organization and the world’s premier animal research institute for developing nations. ILRI’s mission is to improve the lives of people in low- and middle-income countries through livestock science that contributes to equitable and resilient livestock systems, delivering food systems transformation with climate and environmental benefits.

ILRI’s mission emphasizes the interconnections between people, animals, and the environment, aiming to improve the lives of more than 300 million people. This mission is delivered through two core strategic objectives:

  • Co-designing and deploying sustainable, science-based livestock solutions.
  • Leveraging science to inform and influence policy and investment decisions.

From major research facilities in Kenya and Ethiopia to strategic research partnerships across Africa, South, Southeast and East Asia, ILRI’s research scientists partner with local and international counterparts in animal research organisations, governments and the development community worldwide. Funded through grants from governments, philanthropic bodies and joint research programs, ILRI manages significant capital assets and an annual operational budget of around USD 100 million.

ILRI is a member of the CGIAR, a global research alliance that works to transform food, land and water systems in a climate crisis. ILRI is the only CGIAR centre dedicated to addressing multiple development challenges through sustainable livestock solutions.
