Role Overview
This is a hands-on supervisory position for a construction site where you’ll be responsible for coordinating multiple infrastructure workstreams, including internal roads, sewer and stormwater systems, reticulation, electrical installations, small service buildings, and landscaping. You’ll spend most of your day on site, directly managing artisans and labourers, checking that work matches approved drawings and specifications, and keeping the project manager informed of progress or issues. Your main contribution is making sure that each phase of construction is delivered safely, to the required quality, and on schedule, so that the overall development progresses without costly delays or rework.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise the on-site construction team across all assigned activities, from internal roadworks and utility installations to electrical connections and landscaping, ensuring work is carried out correctly and efficiently.
- Run daily toolbox talks to communicate safety expectations, task-specific risks, and proper work procedures before each shift begins.
- Allocate labour, equipment, materials, and specialised artisans to different work fronts, adjusting assignments to keep productivity high and avoid idle time.
- Review project schedules and break down the sequence of work for your team, monitoring progress to ensure that milestones and deadlines are met.
- Calculate and track the materials needed for each project, place orders in advance through the project manager, and monitor usage to prevent overruns or shortages.
- Inspect completed work against quality standards and engineering drawings, providing clear direction to artisans when corrective action is needed.
- Resolve day-to-day personnel issues on site, including conflicts, attendance problems, or performance concerns, and escalate matters that require management involvement.
- Act as the direct link between the project management team and the field crew, communicating scope changes, resolving technical questions, and reporting on daily progress and any risks that could affect delivery.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A diploma in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related built-environment discipline.
- At least 3 years of experience supervising construction activities, preferably in civil or infrastructure projects involving roads, drainage, or utilities.
- Strong working knowledge of quality, health, and safety standards for construction sites, with the ability to enforce them on a daily basis.
- Practical ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and project schedules.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, allowing you to give clear instructions to artisans, collaborate with architects and engineers, and provide accurate updates to project managers.
- Demonstrated integrity and professionalism, with the willingness to address unethical behaviour and report incidents appropriately.
- A service-oriented mindset, able to respond quickly to operational needs and develop practical solutions when issues arise on site.
- Results-driven attitude, with the ability to plan your own work and your team’s work to meet budgets, timeframes, and quality standards.
