It was founded in France in response to the Biafran War. The organization is known in most of the world by its localized name or simply as MSF; in Canada and the United States the name Doctors Without Borders is commonly used. In 2015 over 30,000, mostly local, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, logistical experts, water and sanitation engineers and administrators provided medical aid in over 70 countries. These doctors and nurses decided to volunteer their time to solve issues of world health. Private donors provide about 90% of the organization's funding, while corporate donations provide the rest, giving MSF an annual budget of approximately US$750 million. View more View less

Job Description

Role Overview

You will ensure that all information technology, radio, and telecommunications infrastructure across the mission stays operational, secure, and aligned with organisational standards. Day to day, you monitor equipment performance, adapt global policies to local conditions, and provide advanced troubleshooting and training to logistics teams and end users. Your work directly enables uninterrupted communication, data security, and system resilience for humanitarian field operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor, maintain, and follow up on all IT, radio, and telecom equipment, tools, and services according to organisational policies and mission needs.
  • Adapt and enforce ICT policies and procedures to local contexts, ensuring systems are deployed and kept in working order.
  • Contribute to the annual budget planning for the IT, radio, and telecom families; provide technical input for local procurement and participate in supplier selection.
  • Implement and oversee data security measures—including backup schedules, firewalls, access rights, and software updates—to guarantee data availability and rapid recovery during incidents.
  • Deliver technical support to all users, and provide advanced assistance to logistics staff responsible for radio and IT systems.
  • Design and conduct training sessions and briefings for users and logistics experts on system use and best practices.
  • Prepare regular coordination‑level reports on system performance, technical issues, and infrastructure changes; maintain updated documentation for all ICT assets.
  • Act as the geographic information systems (GIS) technical referent for Geo‑MSF platform usage, including briefings on mapping tools and catalogue navigation.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • University degree in computer science, information technology, or a closely related field. A certification in network or server administration is an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years of proven experience in IT or technical roles, with at least 2 years in information management within humanitarian programmes, protection contexts, or IT management.
  • Fluent English (written and spoken) and Swahili.
  • Strong expertise in the latest Microsoft operating systems and Office 365 applications; experience with SharePoint is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of server management (current Windows Server versions, Active Directory) and Hyper‑V virtualization.
  • Good knowledge of local‑area and virtual‑local‑area networks (LAN/VLAN), network policies, and protocols.
  • Familiarity with file server administration, IT security best practices, and IT service management tools (ITSM).
  • Knowledge of Fortinet equipment is an advantage.
  • Competence with point‑to‑point and point‑to‑multipoint network architectures.
  • Understanding of radio telecommunication concepts (HF, VHF, GSM, satellite).
  • Facilitation, training, and coaching skills.
  • Competencies: results and quality orientation, teamwork, behavioural flexibility, commitment to MSF principles, and stress management.
